Review: NTI Backup NOW! Deluxe 3.0
Posted Jul 1, 2003

July 2003|Much like Dantz on the Mac side, NewTech Infosystems (www.ntius.com) has always led the way with the best and most visible CD-R/RW backup tools in the Windows market, and the latest version of NTI Backup NOW! Deluxe (MSRP $79.99) continues that leadership with support for writable DVD and the increasingly popular USB Pen drives, plus data compression, multidisc spanning for larger Backup and Restore filesets (today's hard drives typically being significantly larger than CD and DVD media), long filenames, partition-level backup and restore, and incremental and scheduled drive backups. The software ships as a suite that includes three applications: Backup NOW!, DriveBackup!, and NTI Backup NOW! Scheduler.

Backup NOW! installs easily (DriveBackup! must be installed as a separate application), although both require Administrator Rights to be installed on network systems running NT, 2000, or XP. The program opens with a familiar Explorer-type window, with the Resource Tree pane on the left and File Information pane on the right with more detailed file-level information. An "EasySteps" Wizard that guides you through the four- or five-step process of creating and implementing a backup job. A "Schedule" button also allows the user or network administrator to set times for regular system backups.

Backup NOW! handles backups smoothly and efficiently through this window, and Restore proved similarly effective. Other key features include Media Spanning for backing up data across multiple CDs or DVDs, and retrieving them via a series of prompts as an uninterrupted, fully restored dataset. Backup NOW! also includes password protection for administrative security, file-level backup that lets the user or administrator include/exclude files from a backup job, and an ingenious "Intelligent Sectoring" feature that enables the product to backup only used sectors. Overall, the facility of the Wizard interface belies the sophistication and power of the software, much to the advantage of the administrator with mission-critical backup responsibilities.

NTI's minimum system requirements include Pentium 1 or higher PC running Windows 95/98/Me/2000 Pro/XP/NT 4.0 Workstation (Service Pack 6); 32MB RAM (64MB required to run NT or 2000); and an NTI-supported CD/DVD recorder for CD/DVD-based backup tasks.
