The Rimage 2000i boasts deft and dashing robotics, two unimpeachable Plextor Premium 52X CD recorders (8X Pioneer A07s in the DVD version), and Rimage’s well-nigh smudge-proof 480i thermal ink printer, as well as a disc mastering application called QuickDisc that makes multiple-project management and prioritizing a priori easy.

When Adobe acquired Syntrillium’s Cool Edit Pro, they got a powerful audio editor with a gorgeous GUI. In Audition 1.0, Adobe hasn’t changed much, except for framing the product as an "audio for video" tool. Which makes sense, given the company it now keeps—AfterEffects, Premiere Pro, and the like.

Like digital audio before it, digital video has its critics, who say it’s too crisp and cool to replace its analog antecedent. Enter CineSwitch and Magic Bullet, two technologies designed to give DV the film-like look it’s missing. But the question remains: how long will we miss it?

Unequivocally, I can say TDK's new 24X FireWire is the single coolest drive I've ever played with. It works perfectly as advertised, tearing off full-disc burns in four minutes with perfect playback, and keeps BURN-Proof handy for the cowed crowd. It ships with an app-packed hybrid software disc including Nero 5.5 and Digital MixMaster for the PC, and ToastLite for the Mac. Toast Lite features Toast Audio Extractor, which rips at a roaring 40X and never misses a beat. $315.99 www.tdk.com

Telex SpinWise 50-16 Robotic CD Duplicator Synopsis: It’s neat to come across a product whose numeric designation makes sense: the SpinWise 50-16 duplication system handles 50 blanks, and burns at 16X. What’s more, for an ultracompetitive $2795 and roughly five minutes of set-up, you get sturdy, swift (Primera-based) robotics and highly reliable two-button recording from a system that averaged a 49:1 successful burn-to-coaster ratio in testing, and comes in a mid-sized footprint well-suited to its small/home office target demographic.
