Synopsis: All in all, Plextor’s latest offering has something for everybody. Pure ripping and recording speed for the professional, and BurnProof to keep the masses happy. It calls itself a 16X recorder, and that it is, dashing off full discs in an impressive five minutes. The bundled software is excellent, and with the combination of Roxio’s Easy CD Creator and Plextor Manager, just about anything is possible.

All in all, the Sony DRU 500A ($349.99) is the DVD peripheral to have. Its support of all formats DVD (except DVD-RAM) and CD makes it as versatile a CD/DVD drive as has ever been released. The drive worked flawlessly in testing except in the case of writing to CDs with Windows XP native packet-writing support. Sony has produced a great drive, but has put too much emphasis on the video aspect of DVD in the software bundle. For anything beyond the most basic CD and DVD-ROM recording chores, the package leaves something to be desired, although the free upgrade to RecordNow DX helps considerably. With slight upgrades to the recording and backup side of the bundle, Sony would have a number one hit here.

Making its triumphant return to the U.S. market in a new fifth-generation version, CeQuadrat WinOnCD targets CD-R pros with a host of advanced features, and a customized surprise under every right mouse-click. Boasting the finest WAV editor around, an impressive array of VideoCD and audio formats, a handy OverSpan feature, plus adults-only file-positioning and disc emulation, WinOnCD 5 meets all CD-R power users’ expectations and then some. When it comes to CD-recording software, CeQuadrat's WinOnCD Version 5 Power Edition ($49.95) has clearly taken the lead and set the standard for all others to meet. EDITOR'S CHOICE
