The Moving Picture: Unsung Heroes
Jan Ozer | In our business, you’re only as good as the tools you can bring to bear on the wide variety of tasks we perform. Review: Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8
Jan Ozer | In designing MediaStudio 8, Ulead obviously decided to pick their markets, not directly facing off against the 800-pound gorillas, but carving out unique pockets of utility, like proxy editing for those editing HDV on underpowered computers and the Smart Compositor for those needing some design assistance. Overall, the product is competent to above-average in most important features, and its friendly interface should be easy for editors navigating upwards from consumer programs, especially compared to the cryptic Pinnacle Liquid Edition and Avid Xpress DV.

BEST OF 2005: EventDV Editors' & Columnists Picks
For many of us—early adopters or not—2005 was the Year of HDV. But there was much more to 2005 than HDV. We saw scads of significant products released that had nothing to do with HDV and of course, event and corporate videographers the world over continuing to do dazzling, innovative, and effective everyday work with or without HDV. To provide readers with a highly subjective “Year in Review” report, we asked EventDV’s many esteemed and opinionated columnists and contributing editors to reflect on the new products they saw in 2005 and tell us what struck them as the most exciting, and the biggest boon to their own work.

Our Battle of the Software NLEs series continues with a look at two key effects for pro video editors: slow motion and image stabilization. Once again, we face off our five familiar contenders: Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid Xpress Pro, Pinnacle Liquid Edition, and Sony Vegas.

Review: Serious Magic ULTRA 2--EDITOR'S CHOICE
Lee Rickwood |The Editor's Choice-winning ULTRA 2 is one of the easiest, most efficient, and effective chromakey tools we've seen. Having the ability to see real-time previews while tweaking a chromakey shoot is terrific, and the fast rendering times (with appropriate equipment) really speed up the entire process. You can get a decent key in and out of the system in minutes, but the ability to polish up the look and feel of a keyed effect is amazing, and shadows and reflections alone are worth the price of admission.

Inside Avid Xpress Studio HD
Avid Xpress Studio HD is far more expensive than the competition. That will and should dissuade some potential users, as will the somewhat steeper learning curve for most of the tools compared to Apple, Adobe, or Ulead. But consider what you’re getting: three industry-standard, time-proven editing interfaces in Xpress Pro, Pro Tools LE, and Avid 3D, and solid DVD authoring technology from Sonic in Avid DVD, that are continuing to evolve and grab features from their high-end siblings.

Review: HVR-Z1U Camcorder
We’ve already reviewed the FX1 and found it to be a darling of a camcorder, as has the most of the rest of the world. Since you can expect the same audio/video quality from the Z1U, the $1,400 price disparity raises the inevitable question: when should you spend the extra dough and buy the professional version? In addition to producing outstanding quality in both DV and HDV modes, key advantages of the Z1U include DVCAM support, professional audio support, and new image adjustment capabilities like skin detail, black stretch, hypergain, and enhanced color correction.

It boasts excellent image quality and limited but functional DVD menu creation. It’s also a rock-solid desktop burner, promising and delivering state-of-the-art high-speed DVD±R/RW and 4X double-layer DVD+R DL.

Pre-Pro NLEs
Stephen F. Nathans|You’re new to event video, but you know you have a knack for it. You want to hit the ground running—even if it’s only a half-dozen events per year—but you need to watch your pennies as you go. You can’t commit $600+ to any one tool, but you’re too ambitious and too quick a learner to start with a consumer tool that’s functionally a dead end. You need software that’s built for a pro, but sold at consumer-level pricing, with select feature reductions accounting for the difference. Enter the Pre-Pro NLE.

Review: Editor's Choice-Roxio Easy Media Creator 7
Never has a consumer product in the digital media space packed so much power and versatility and made it so easy to get to. For application triage, Creator 7 has no peer. With the exception of the (still) disappointingly limited DVD Builder, they are all fine tools, and there are logical (and usually multiple) ways to navigate between them. What’s more, it’s got a mind-boggling price: it’s hard to argue with a suite jam-packed with top-notch apps for $99.

Review: Apple Soundtrack
From its ease of use to the sheer volume of clips and effects, Soundtrack is yet another example of the philosophy that’s made Apple so successful on the content creation scene. Cuts, in and out points, and crossfades work the same way in audio as they do in video, and Soundtrack’s very NLE-like GUI will make video pros feel right at home.

Review: Adobe Premiere Pro
synopsis: If you analyze Premiere across the complete range of relevant features, it’s a strong performer, particularly in critical areas like timeline editing and rendering. This is especially true when you consider the cast of Adobe products that surround Premiere. Some, like After Effects, buttress Premiere’s weaknesses in chromakeying and other special effects. Others, like Photoshop and Encore, are must-have production tools. For many producers, Adobe’s ability to bundle and aggressively price these tools gives Premiere an edge that no other editor can match.

Review: NewTek Video Toaster [2]
Synopsis: NewTek's Video Toaster [2] is head and shoulders above the sub-$2,000 competition in terms of performance, capabilities, and feel. The only issues are whether you can justify the $3995 purchase price, and whether you can stomach jumping into a non-linear editing environment built more for TV producers than the average computer user. It's clearly the hottest hardware we've reviewed to date, with true, real-time operation for every tested effect. But it's clearly overkill for most DVD and Web producers, and the interface is best-suited for consistent, rather than casual users. This makes it better-suited for professional videographers, rather than corporate departments with infrequent video projects.

Final Cut Pro 3.0 is powerful non-linear editing software that requires no special hardware to deliver proifessional performance and quality results (assuming you bring the talent). And Final Cut Pro 3.0 adds some impressive new features that only hammer the point home.

Synopsis: With Edition, Pinnacle's first-release version of the mature FastStudio software they acquired from Fast Multimedia, DV video producers in particular have a new, very affordable tool that can work on anything from a desktop to notebook with professional functionality and results. Edition is a new tool in today's digital studio, and part of a new trend of capable, yet affordable tools. It stands rightly a notch above Premiere and is priced and positioned aggressively against the real competition from editing solutions like Final Cut and Avid's XPress DV. That alone should give you reason enough to take a look.

Review: ADS Technologies USB Instant DVD
Synopsis: USB Instant DVD is a featherweight plastic box with lots of I/O and, from the looks of things, not much else—besides nifty interior chipware that keeps MPEG encoding out of sight and out of mind. Designed to be a sort of digital-studio-in-a-box, Instant certainly doesn't make your PC into the same sort of video production powerhouse as, say, Final Cut Pro or Premiere, much less higher-priced MPEG encoding hardware. But it captures and encodes full-frame MPEG-2 and delivers it to your hard drive via USB in malleable shape, and comes with software to edit and prepare it for VCD or DVD output. If sadly misnamed "quick and dirty" capture-to-chapter DVD creation is what you have in mind, Instant DVD definitely gets a dirty job done.

Review: Sonic MyDVD 4 Video Suite
