BEST OF 2005: EventDV Editors' & Columnists Picks
For many of us—early adopters or not—2005 was the Year of HDV. But there was much more to 2005 than HDV. To provide readers with a highly subjective “Year in Review” report, we asked EventDV’s many esteemed and opinionated columnists and contributing editors to reflect on the new products they saw in 2005 and tell us what struck them as the most exciting, and the biggest boon to their own work.

Adventures in the Screen Trade
Recessions make us think small. Distinctions blur. The digital studio monitor market isn’t as healthy or profitable as it’s been, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of large-screen, luminous, high-resolution displays out there. Synopsis: NewTek's Video Toaster [2] is head and shoulders above the sub-$2,000 competition in terms of performance, capabilities, and feel. The only issues are whether you can justify the $3995 purchase price, and whether you can stomach jumping into a non-linear editing environment built more for TV producers than the average computer user. It's clearly the hottest hardware we've reviewed to date, with true, real-time operation for every tested effect. But it's clearly overkill for most DVD and Web producers, and the interface is best-suited for consistent, rather than casual users. This makes it better-suited for professional videographers, rather than corporate departments with infrequent video projects.
