Making History
Hal Slifer | Producing family histories and biographies can make personal event video a much more rewarding endeavor—for both your client and your own bottom line. But the clients we encounter today are well-schooled in the rich and dramatic documentary styles of the Biography Channel, VH1’s Behind the Music, and the E! True Hollywood Story, and expect nothing less from the work we produce for them. Here’s a look at what’s involved in meeting—and exceeding—those expectations.

Amen Corner: Amen to That
Tim Siglin | This bimonthly column will cover a variety of topics over the next year. We'll first explore the growing trend in mega-churches toward installing and using multicamera setups, displaying video on multiple giant screens, and beaming it across the U.S. Some of these systems rival or exceed systems used in convention centers and civic auditoriums.

Editing Ergonomics
Todd Gillespie | As video editors, most of us spend the bulk of our non-shooting time pecking away at our keyboards and staring into our monitors. For us it’s paramount to pay attention to ergonomic issues to avoid the various physical problems that can arise if we don’t. Here are some tips on making your editing ergonomically sound.

The Challenges of Changing Markets
Geoff Daily | Event videography is largely a local business, with videographers serving markets in closest proximity to them; relocating to a new market inevitably means losing established business as well as your hard-earned reputation. But relocating can bring about opportunities as well as challenges, and might even be just what your business needs.

Producing Memorial Tribute Videos
Lucy Galbraith | A memorial tribute video is, in essence, a video eulogy, a photo montage created from pictures provided by family memners and shown at the memorial service. Succeeding in memorial video means developing a unique business model--working with extremely short turnaround times, booking clients almost exclusively through funeral homes--but it also provides steady and profitable work.

Storyboards ... An Unauthorized Biography

Battle of the Software NLEs, Part 3: Slow Motion and Image Stabilization
Our Battle of the Software NLEs series continues with a look at two key effects for pro video editors: slow motion and image stabilization. While slow motion is popularly used to enhance detail during action shots and add drama, image stabilization is more of a corrective, reducing shakiness on footage that couldn’t be shot with a tripod. Once again, we face off our five familiar contenders: Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid Xpress Pro, Pinnacle Liquid Edition, and Sony Vegas.

Shooting Under the Knife
Like legal videography, doing professional surgical shoots provides the weekend warriors of event video with another way to apply their talents to mid-week work and shore up their season-specific income. Unlike legal video, medical videography doesn’t require a great deal of subject-specific knowledge, but it does take a strong stomach, and demands the quick mastery of the lighting challenges and a good rapport with the surgical staff.

Pre-Pro NLEs
Stephen F. Nathans|You’re new to event video, but you know you have a knack for it. You want to hit the ground running—even if it’s only a half-dozen events per year—but you need to watch your pennies as you go. You can’t commit $600+ to any one tool, but you’re too ambitious and too quick a learner to start with a consumer tool that’s functionally a dead end. You need software that’s built for a pro, but sold at consumer-level pricing, with select feature reductions accounting for the difference. Enter the Pre-Pro NLE.

Blue Highways
All signs point to a hi-def future as long as we're still delivering content on shiny discs, we'll need a DVD-or worthy successor-that can handle hi-def content. Two blue laser-based formats, Blu-ray and HD-DVD, suggest different, equally likely roads to the same destination. Both have powerful backing, with NEC, Sanyo, and Toshiba on the HD-DVD side and Sony, Philips, and Pioneer on the Blu-ray side. Many questions remain: How do the formats differ? Which one will win out? And who will decide?

Stephen F. Nathans | We've come a long way from the days when the knock on videographers was that they were too intrusive, if the popularity of videos where the videographer is encouraged to impose is any indication. And I still wonder how and when you cross that line from invisibility to presence, and actually impose your will on an event.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: there’s no easier way to make an attractive, easily navigated DVD than using MyDVD, and that’s as much the case in version 6 as in version 5. Which is saying something, since the competition got better in the meantime.

Traveling Light
Jan Ozer|Shooting on a budget almost always means less than ideal lighting.
