Review: Epson PP-100 Discproducer

As our business has grown, the need for larger duplication orders from our corporate clients has increased. I wasn’t happy with the performance and print quality we were getting from our older disc-printing solution and was looking for a higher-end solution. That is why I was happy to receive the Epson PP-100 Discproducer for review.

The PP-100 is a super-cool printer that doubles as a duplicator, an all in one system that is worth the investment (street price $2,995). You can easily duplicate and print up to 100 discs unattended on glossy or matte media. Six-color printing technology allows you to print exceptional-quality labels that rival discs put out by the Hollywood studios. More surprising still, the unit comes with two DVD burners for speedy production. Whether you need to produce one disc or 1,000, you will find the PP-100 is a professionally built, very solid, and reliable duplicator/printer.

Setup
Setting up the printer is a simple process that requires installing the included Total Disc Maker software, connecting the USB cable, and powering on the unit. Because the PP-100 weighs 52 pounds, you’ll need to make sure that you place it on a sturdy surface that can handle the weight.

The included disc stackers can hold up to 100 DVDs or CDs for hands-free operation. Another cool feature allows you to output short-run duplication jobs to the tray below without the need to open the unit while it is printing.

The Discproducer comes with six ink cartridges that easily push into place. The set of cartridges comes loaded with plenty of ink and is rated to print up to 1,000 discs. Cartridges run $45 each, bringing the total cost of replacing the cartridges to $270. This works out to be 27 cents per disc, which is less than the 45 cents per-disc cost associated with thermal printers. In comparison, the Epson R300 per disc cost runs around 15 to 20 cents, making the Epson PP-100 only slightly higher in cost for ink. I’m happy to report that the disc-feed tray for the printer works flawlessly. This is a professional, well-built product that should prove to be very reliable down the road.

Using the Software
The Total Disc Maker software (below) that ships with the unit is simple and straightforward to use. It is only compatible with Windows-based systems, although Intel Mac users running Windows via Parallels Desktop or Bootcamp should be able to use it. Similar to burning a disc in Nero, you have the option of creating a Data DVD, Data CD, Music CD, Music & Data CD, Video CD, or a Copy of a DVD or CD. The PP-100 will use your existing DVD drive in your computer as your source drive for making straight copies. You can create a label from the professional templates provided or use your own background image. BMP or JPEG images can be imported, but unfortunately the software does not support Photoshop (PSD) files. Text is easy to add and manipulate with basic drawing tools as well as the ability to add thumbnail images to your disc.

Once the disc design is complete, you can then move on to the Publish button. From here, you have the option of writing the data, printing just the label, or both. Because the PP-100 comes with two DVD burners, selecting both drives during burning will really speed up the print job.

Monitoring the Production Job
Another great feature of the printer is the Epson Total Disc Monitoring software (below). The software automatically pops up once you begin publishing a job and gives you vital information about the printer and duplicator status. It lets you know when your discs are getting low as well as monitoring ink levels. It will even estimate the number of discs you can print based on the level of ink remaining in the cartridge.

figure 1

The software will also tell you the status of the DVD burners, including when the printer is printing discs. You can also see what jobs are pending and keep tabs on the jobs that are completed.

Notable Features
The Discproducer allows you to save each job with its own filename. The next time the software is loaded, you will see previously saved jobs available to open. This is a real timesaver if you have reorders for past duplications.

The robotic arm is equipped with an AcuGrip mechanism that ensures the robotic arm reliably grabs only one disc, and it has a cool LED light that shines down to let you know what it’s doing. It even has the ability to separate discs that are stuck together when picking up the disc from the stack.

Because the Discproducer uses six separate ink cartridges, you need to replace only the ones that are empty.

The average speed for printing a full-color disc without burning is little more than a minute. Speeds for duplication will vary on the type of media used, but I’ve produced 30 discs in less than 45 minutes.

Since the discs are stored inside the unit, they remain free from fingerprints and dust. Single-run discs are quick to remove and only require you to slide out the tray on the bottom to retrieve the disc.

Conclusion
The Discproducer is an innovative, high-quality solution that makes duplication and printing easier than ever. Whether you want to use it for an individual disc or a batch job, its high reliability, superb print quality (below), and cost-effectiveness make it the ideal system for videographers who are looking for an all-in-one solution.

NovaStor Unveils the Complete Data Protection And Disaster Recovery Solution: NovaBACKUP 10

NovaStor, a leading provider of software solutions for data availability and protection today announced the availability of NovaBACKUP 10, the latest version of its flagship NovaBACKUP data protection and disaster recovery software for Windows-based PCs and Servers. This latest version empowers users with the choice to create backups and store data locally or online, and even includes a free one year online storage account. Previous versions only supported local backup to hard drives, tape drives, CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc burners, and network attached storage (NAS) devices; the new release enables online backup capabilities via FTP to corporate servers or to other online storage services. NovaBACKUP 10 is the first all in one solution from a major data protection software provider to offer this level of flexibility in protecting user’s critical information wherever they are, to virtually any backup device, simply and reliably.

Features new to NovaBACKUP 10 include disk image recovery, which takes a snapshot of the entire system to protect and preserve data in the event of a disaster allowing recovery from a local or network source; and the ability to backup, copy or mirror data to FTP or online storage accounts offered by NovaStor, Amazon’s S3, and others to be added soon.

"Most data protection applications limit users to backing up to local backup devices and force them to use proprietary backup technology," said Mike Andrews, Managing Director of NovaStor. "NovaBACKUP 10 enables users with the freedom to choose not only whether to backup locally or online, but also the flexibility to backup in the format that best suits the user’s needs."

"Managing a local backup and an online backup service can be time consuming and frustrating for many computer users," said Wolfgang Schlichting, Research Director for Removable Storage at IDC. "Solutions like NovaStor’s NovaBACKUP 10 address this challenge by combining both backup methodologies into one software package. This strategy offers users more flexibility and peace of mind by creating on-premise backups for quick file restores and off-premise backups of critical files in the case of a catastrophe that wipes out the computer and the local backup."

Pricing and Availability
NovaBACKUP 10 will be offered in the following 3 distinct versions and be commercially available immediately from popular industry resellers and distributors, or directly from NovaStor’s online web store located at www.novastor.com:

  • NovaBACKUP 10 Professional– Basic version for backup and disaster recovery on a single Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 PC. Includes a free one year 2GB online storage account. MSRP $49.95
  • NovaBACKUP 10 Server – Server version for backup and disaster recovery for a single Windows 2000 or 2003 Server. Includes a free one year 5GB online storage account MSRP $199.95
  • NovaBACKUP 10 Business Essentials – Backup and disaster recovery for a single Windows 2000, or 2003 Server, including Microsoft Exchange and SQL support. Includes a free one year 10GB online storage account MSRP $499.00
A 15 day trial version of NovaBACKUP 10 can be downloaded here.

Netflix Teams With Streaming Media Innovator Roku on Player That Instantly Streams Movies From Netflix Directly to the TV

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), the world's largest online movie rental service, and Roku, Inc., an innovator in digital media streaming technology, today announced the introduction of The Netflix Player by Roku™, a device that enables Netflix subscribers to instantly stream a growing library of movies and TV episodes from Netflix directly to the TV. Priced at just $99.99, the player is available for purchase here.

The player is simple to install, easy to use, and gives Netflix members instant access to more than 10,000 movies and TV episodes. "We're excited to bring the first Netflix ready device to the market," said Anthony Wood, CEO and founder of Roku. "The seamless integration of the Netflix service into our player has resulted in true ease of use for the consumer. Now, streaming video isn't limited to people sitting in front of the PC; it's ready for the TV in the living room."

"The key breakthroughs of The Netflix Player by Roku are simplicity and cost," said Reed Hastings, chairman and CEO of Netflix. "First, it allows consumers to use the full power of the Netflix Web site to choose movies for their instant Queue, and then automatically displays only those choices on the TV screen. That's a major improvement versus the clutter of trying to choose from 10,000 films on the TV. Second, there are no extra charges and no viewing restrictions. For a one-time purchase of $99, Netflix members can watch as much as they want and as often as they want without paying more or impacting the number of DVDs they receive."

About The Netflix Player by Roku
The Netflix Player by Roku is surprisingly compact -- roughly the size of a paperback book -- and can integrate easily into any home entertainment system. All it takes is connecting the player to a TV and to the Internet. For homes with wireless Internet connectivity, the player is Wi-Fi enabled and offers the ultimate in placement flexibility.

From the Netflix Web site, members simply add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues, and those choices are then displayed on the TV and available to watch instantly. With the player's accompanying remote control, members can browse and make selections right on the TV screen and also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the remote. In all, the Queue-based user interface creates a highly personalized experience that puts members in control.

Additional features of the product include optimization of the Netflix video streaming technology, which eliminates the need for a hard disk drive associated with video downloads, and built-in connectivity for automatic software upgrades, which will keep the device current with service enhancements.

FUZE Media Systems Partners with ArcSoft

FUZE Media Systems, makers of the industry’s most hardened whole-home media system, today announced that it has partnered with ArcSoft for Blu-ray playback. Following the company’s recent OEM software announcement, ArcSoft is the first announced software partner that will be leveraged in both FUZE Media Systems and OEM partner media devices.

Adding Blu-Ray disc playback is the latest in feature enhancements for the appliance-like media system that delivers whole-home live & recorded TV, traditional DVDs, home movies, digital photos, and music. The selection of ArcSoft highlights that organization’s software leadership in Blu-ray playback.

“FUZE has come to represent the vanguard in whole-home media,” said Bob Silver, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at FUZE. “In the past year, we have continued to enhance our whole-home media solution to make it even more desirable, and this partnership with ArcSoft is a logical next step for us. Arcsoft has proven its Blu-Ray leadership, and our partnership has enabled us to rapidly implement for our dealer network and our OEM partners.”

Michael Downs, VP of Marketing & Business Development at ArcSoft, added, “This is an exciting announcement for us. FUZE has delivered an entirely different sort of media system to market—one that is simplified, robust, and delivers a performance that functions more like an appliance than a computer. This is a powerful force for the industry, and we are confident that ArcSoft’s Blu-Ray software will play a key role in improving whole-home media distribution moving forward.”

Both companies noted that the Blu-Ray capability has been implemented and is immediately available for sale.

Panasonic Develops World's First Single-Chip Signal Processing LSI for Blu-ray Disc Players

Panasonic, the leading brand by which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is known, has developed the world's first Blu-ray Disc (BD) player-specific single-chip signal processing LSI (product number: MN2WS006), in response to the latest BD standards. This LSI combines a front end to read the signal from the BD, and a back end to convert this into AV data. Samples of this LSI will begin shipping in June 2008. By using this product, Panasonic will be able to realize smaller sizes and lower power consumption in BD players compatible with the latest BD standards.

This product features the following characteristics:

  • Complete support for the latest BD standards*2, and functions including dual-screen simultaneous video playback, high-quality audio playback, and network compatibility achieved on a single chip
  • Creation of a single chip for the signal processing system, through use of cutting-edge microprocessing, allows for 50% reduction in mounting surface area and 25% reduction in power consumption, compared to current Panasonic products
  • Application of the new-generation UniPhier platform developed originally by Panasonic enables customers to achieve higher-quality software improvement with shorter interval.
This product has been created using the following technologies:
  • Multi-standard video decoding technology to enable video playback for BD, DVD, and CD media, and standards including MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 and VC-1; high-quality audio playback compatible with lossless coding; and dual-screen simultaneous video playback including high definition video, and a high-performance and high-speed graphics engine technology which enables not only 2D graphic processing but also 3D graphic processing or curved surface drawing
  • Unified memory architecture technology reducing about 45% of major semiconductor parts (including external memories) together with integration of LSIs into a single chip using 45-nanometer process technology

lue Ray Technologies Wins Lawsuit by Ex-Employee

Blue Ray Technologies has won a lawsuit filed by an ex-employee with Spokane Superior Court Judge Michael P. Price telling the plaintiff Yelena Simonyan that that her case was baseless and calling her motive "hostile."

The judge also disclosed that she had a former felony conviction for fraudulent dealings with the IRS which she had not disclosed, and was apparently sufficient grounds for her firing by BRT chairman Erick Hansen in October 2007. Simonyan, who was in finance at BRT, had brought the lawsuit (case no. 08-201747-2, Spokane, WA) against the company claiming she had invested money and time, and wanted the company to produce records as to why it hadn't gone public.

Hansen says a potential investor group backed out after discovering her conviction during background checks. In addition, her lawsuit had caused other investor concerns as well as negative publicity in the Spokane Review last week. "A lot of people ran away when someone made a false accusations and allegations," according to Hansen.

"That a local newspaper would do so would appear in contradiction with Spokane officials desire to have BRT's Blue-ray disc manufacturing plant as central to its plan to revitalize its downtown area as a new technology center. The smart tech people are saying Blue Ray Technologies could be the next billion dollar success story in technology," Hansen noted.

The company also is seeking damages, according to their attorney, for the alleged wrongful disclosure of confidential documents, and for recovery related to the company's not having been told of Simonyan's felony conviction. "I was amazed at the diligence of the judge to be fair and that justice done for everyone involved," Hansen said.

Specifically the Judge's letter and order read in part:

The Court is advised that part and parcel to Ms. Simonyan's termination, was her failure to disclose an underlying felony conviction for fraud in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Only in background checks conducted by a potential investor group was this conviction revealed and apparently was never offered or discussed by the Plaintiff. Arguably, in a start up corporation attempting to seek private funding, this conviction could have, or perhaps even did present itself as a highly difficult and sensitive situation.

The Court is satisfied in this instance that the Defendant has in fact provided all information that is required by statute. There apparently has been no additional or new records request made, so any request for updated records is premature. The Court is further satisfied that the Defendant has shown a good faith basis to believe that Plaintiff's motive behind the request for these additional records is in fact hostile to the corporation and is now being presented to the Court in an attempt to leverage the Plaintiff's buy-out from the corporation by and through the commencement of this lawsuit. Pursuant to RCW 23(b).16.020, the Plaintiff's request for an order to show cause re production of additional records would forthwith be denied.

"Plaintiff Yelena Simonyan's motion for an order to show cause requiring Blue Ray Technologies to make additional records requested by Plaintiff available for inspection is forthwith denied," according to Michael P. Price, Superior Court Judge.

Hansen is in the process of building new facilities in Spokane and other cities designed to be capable of handling the next generation of movie and game discs, Blue-ray 2.0, which gives an interactive web dimension to the consumer, and offer up to five layers of entertainment.

Hansen has also been in negotiations with the major studios through an affiliated company for downloadable high definition content over the Internet. While being a pioneer in DVD and now championing Blu-ray discs, Hansen also believes in delivering the best in movie and game content in whatever form the consumer wants it.

With the end of the format war, and 70% of the US having bought or buying HD screens (according to Nielsen figures) There is an overwhelming demand now for instant product in Blu-ray is the present and future in the arena, according to DVD pioneer and Blue Ray Technologies founder Erick Hansen.

The demand means multiple production and shipping locations are needed, he said, something never done before in this end of the industry. The demand he says is especially for TV shows, from major sports like NFL or NBA to American Idol or CSI, fans who want their shows quickly, and if they missed an episode, online access does not give them HD, Blu-ray quality for their big screens.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America and PTA Launch Digital Video Service for Families

Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in conjunction with HP (NYSE:HPQ) today launched a first-of-its-kind national digital video service program that allows families to access and purchase age-appropriate digital content in a safe and secure online environment.

Created and managed by Harmony Digital Media Consortium with the support of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), this initiative encourages families to make informed media choices by serving as a tool for parents to help them manage their children’s exposure to electronic media. Additionally, the program helps raise funds for two child-focused non-profit organizations, BGCA, which serves 4.8 million youth through club membership and community outreach, and PTA with more than 5.5 million members.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of America provides a safe place for young people to learn and grow, helping them develop into caring, responsible citizens,” said Cyndi Court, senior vice president, Resource Development, Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “This program extends our vision by providing a secure environment for youth to enjoy entertainment that is appropriate for them, while raising funds for important programs that benefit youth in cities across the country.”

One of BGCA’s programs to benefit from this collaboration is the Family PLUS (Parents Leading, Uniting, Serving) initiative, which serves as a model for Boys & Girls Clubs wanting to implement family support activities into their programming.

The digital video service program also supports PTA’s mission, which is to help children reach their full potential by providing tools for parents to get involved and manage their children’s health, education and safety.

“As the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the country, PTA believes that it is the responsibility of parents, teachers and caregivers to influence children’s exposure to electronic media,” said Jan Harp Domene, national president, PTA. “The resources offered through this program help parents fulfill this responsibility by bringing educational and age-appropriate entertainment and technology to children and families.”

Beginning today, consumers can browse and purchase content on one of the two online video stores powered by HP – PTA Video Store and BCGA Video Store. Video gift cards also are available on these sites.

BGCA cards will also be available at Circuit City stores nationwide and PTA video gift cards will be available at Office Depot stores nationwide later this year. Additionally, this program will be available as a fundraising tool for local PTA units beginning in the fall. Proceeds from the purchases on these sites will support the child-focused work undertaken by both organizations.

Gift cards can be redeemed at one of the two online video stores. Collectively, these sites offer more than 10,000 movie and TV titles from all major studios, including all MPAA member companies and most independent studios, as well as numerous specialty content providers. Movie titles include Alvin & The Chipmunks, Bee Movie, Enchanted, Nancy Drew, and National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets; TV titles include Avatar: Last Airbender Book 3: Fire Volume, Sponge Bob Square Pants: Pest of the West and Speed Racer the Next Generation: The Beginning.

In addition to age-appropriate TV titles, the BGCA online video store will carry movie titles with a G or PG rating from the MPAA. The PTA video store also will offer movies rated PG-13 by the MPAA. Movie and TV titles will be offered in a variety of formats, including DVD, Blu-ray and as digital downloads.

With a variety of appropriate G, PG and PG-13 titles available, the video gift card program is supported by the MPAA, which, through the film ratings system, plays an important role in providing information to parents about the content of films so that they can make informed viewing decisions for their children.

“For 40 years, the MPAA’s film ratings system has helped millions of parents make informed decisions about appropriate film content for their children,” said Joan Graves, chairman, Classification and Ratings Administration, Motion Picture Association of America. “This effort further arms parents with the information they need to make more educated choices for their children.”

Development of the online video stores for this fundraising program is made possible through HP Digital Content Services, which created a platform that enables consumers to acquire video content in various forms, such as digital downloads, traditional-packaged DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

“HP is providing the technological backbone of a program that offers digital content, such as movies and TV shows, in both familiar and emerging formats for the whole family to enjoy,” said Willem de Zoete, vice president and general manager, Digital Content Services, HP. “This program provides busy parents with a simple, secure solution for ordering age-appropriate video entertainment, while also benefiting the child-focused missions of these important nonprofit organizations.”
