| The DVD Download Business, Part 7: IP-Enabled Game Consoles |
What’s the fastest, easiest, and least expensive way to show a Blu-ray movie on your TV? Probably by stealing your son’s or daughter’s PS3 game console and hooking it up to your TV. Similarly, IP-enabled game consoles have the potential to be the fastest, easiest and least expensive way to download movies to your TV. Why buy a specialized set-top box when you can get the same functionality from your Xbox or PS3 game console? The game console’s potential to double as a movie download platform has not gone unnoticed by market analysts. “With other features like DVD and/or Blu-ray playback, the console is more readily positioned as the centerpiece of the home’s digital entertainment system,” says Mark Kirstein, president of MultiMedia Intelligence. The firm has examined game consoles in two recent research reports: “The Connected Home,” and “IP-Enabled Consumer Electronics: Internet Video & Digital Media to the TV.” Kirstein suggests that the game console may end up serving as this industry’s “Trojan horse” by bursting open the gates to let the mass market in. “The large installed base and market acceptance of game consoles might very well bring in new viewers and ultimately make online distribution more compelling to content holders, perhaps signaling an enduring evolutionary step in how we consume our entertainment.” Microsoft realized early on that its Xbox game console could double as a movie delivery console (and double Microsoft profits). In 2006 it launched the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Although primarily intended to enable gamers to play together online and to serve as a download store for games, the Web site also allows for the downloading of TV shows and movies, including content from MTV, Warner Bros., Paramount, Fox, MGM, New Line, and National Geographic. And this summer at the E3 conference, Microsoft announced a partnership with Netflix, the world’s largest online movie rental service. Now Xbox 360 owners will be able to stream films and video from Netflix to their game consoles via Xbox LIVE Marketplace. And Sony too has been smart, if a bit cagey, about its game console. From the get-go Sony showed its understanding of the game console’s potential as the living room’s central entertainment device by insisting that their PlayStation include a Blu-ray player. But the company has been slow to recognize the PS3’s potential for movie downloading. Sony surprised the analysts and pundits by allowing Microsoft to get a huge head start in this market with its Xbox LIVE service. This was doubly surprising considering that Sony Pictures is one of the world’s largest owners of movie content -- thus Sony would have a lot to gain by giving the millions of PS3 owners the opportunity to easily buy movies. Sony does have an online gaming service similar to Xbox LIVE. It is called the PlayStation Network, and it includes something called the PlayStation Store. But as far as offering movies via the store goes, Sony has been dragging its feet for years. After many months of rumors, Sony finally announced this summer at the E3 conference that it was launching an online video purchase and rental service. At that time the PlayStation Network site went through some re-design, including the adding of a “Video” button to the store. Along with Sony Pictures, other studios and content providers to this new service include: Warner, Fox Television and Film, MGM, Lionsgate, and 20th Century Fox. While Microsoft and Sony have been busy trying to work out ways to get their game consoles to do double duty, Nintendo has resolutely remained gamer-centric. “Wii has been successful because it has done one thing and done it very well,” says Parks Associates analyst Kurt Scherf. “In the short term it is unlikely that Nintendo will want to jeopardize the reputation they’ve built with this thing by adding new bells and whistles.” But Scherf isn’t quite so sure about the long-term outlook for Wii. “Down the road, it’s all in play,” he says. There are a lot of arguments to be made for nominating the game console as the ideal set-top box for movie downloading (as Sony has recently recognized). “The reason why the Internet-connected game consoles are such great next generation video delivery platforms is that they are already optimized for graphics, etcetera. And they also have onboard storage,” says TDG analyst Micheal Greeson. “And most importantly, they have already got a built-in base of devotees, of fanatics.” In the case of the Microsoft Xbox, its fanatics are “already using the Xbox LIVE service, which is morphing into a media service,” says Greeson. Offering a download service is a great idea for both Sony and Microsoft. “It gives them a direct pipeline to consumers that are brand sympathetic and enthusiasts for new media.” How many fanatics are we talking about? According to MultiMedia Intelligence – “Game consoles already represent a consumer installed base of 55 million Internet-enabled devices.” But there are also some good counter-arguments to the game console route. As Nintendo seems to recognize, it often pays to specialize. Nintendo seems to want to prevent its Wii from resembling a Swiss army knife – good for many jobs but great for nothing. And then there is the potential of inter-family turf wars -- just as most adults don’t want to watch movies on their desktops, some kids probably don’t want to play games in the family living room. Imagine the violent Homer/Bart Simpson style conflicts that reliance on a single console for both movies and games might cause within families: Homer: “I’ve got my Duff beer and chips, where’s the Xbox?” Marge: “Bart’s got it in his bedroom.” Homer: “Why, that little…” To read Parts 1-7 of EMedialive's DVD Download Business series, click here.Mark Fritz (markfritz at intergrafix.net) is a contributing editor to EMedialive and Streaming Media. |

| Explosive Growth Forecast by In-Stat in Online Video Market, Netflix Subscription Model Wins |
The worldwide online video market is experiencing dramatic growth, reports In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com). Worldwide online video revenue is expected to eclipse US$4.5 billion by 2012, up from $1.2 billion in 2008, the high-tech market research firm says. Purchased/rented videos are expected to offer the most robust growth for online video in the near term, in large part due to an increase in subscription services such as Netflix, which charges a flat monthly fee to deliver an optimal combination of packaged goods and online content that can be viewed on home TV sets. Ad-supported professional video from major TV networks will become a strong revenue contributor by 2012. “What is now seen as a predominantly younger pastime will spread to encompass a wider group of people, in part due to the aging of current online video viewers, but also as a result of word of mouth, spread of services, growth of in-home networks, and new network-connected consumer electronic devices,” says Gerry Kaufhold, In-Stat analyst. “The survey data in a recent In-Stat report indicates that over half of consumers actually still prefer packaged goods, which bodes well for Blu-ray discs. Surprisingly, younger people who regularly watch online were the group that expressed the highest interest in owning a package goods bundle that includes artwork and extra content.” Recent research by In-Stat found the following: - By 2012, 39% of adults in the U.S. are expected to have purchased or rented online video.
- 54% of respondents to an In-Stat survey of U.S. consumers still favor physical discs when purchasing movies or TV shows.
- By 2012, In-Stat forecasts that 90% of U.S. households will have access to broadband, with 94% of these individuals watching online video.
The research, “World Report on Online Video” (#IN0804026CM), covers the worldwide market for online video, including video rental/purchase, ad-supported TV programs, and ad-supported User Generated Video. The report presents an in-depth discussion of the market dynamics, as well as analysis of the various online video business models, and concludes that flat-rate pricing for a combination of packaged goods and online convenience is becoming the winning approach. It provides forecasts for broadband penetration, growth in online video viewers, and online video revenue for three categories through 2012. It also includes analysis of a recent In-Stat U.S. consumer survey on online video. An overview of U.S. online video providers is included. For more information on this research or to purchase it online, click here . To contact a sales representative, click here. The price is $3,495 (US). |

| Hitachi Debuts Three Format Hybrid Blu-ray Disc Camcorder |
Hitachi Home Electronics (America), Inc. continues to introduce state-of-the-art consumer electronics with its next-generation Blu-ray Disc Hybrid Camcorder with the ability to record onto the next generation HD format, Blu-ray. A step above from its predecessor announced last year, the DZ-BD10HA from Hitachi’s Consumer Group contains several new features and improvements. A newly developed 7 mega pixel CMOS image sensor, which captures rich and vibrant videos and stills in FullHD (1920 x 1080) High Definition. The new DZ-BD10HA can also record up to 4 hours 20 minutes of 1920x1080 video or 8 hours 40 minutes of 1440x1080 video onto the built-in 30 GB HDD. Additionally, the built-in SDHC card slot provides added flexibility by allowing for Full HD video and still recordings. The new DZ-BD10HA also offers a dubbing function that allows Full HD video to be transferred with the single push of a button from either the HDD or SDHC card to the BD drive, all within the camcorder, without having to connect to a PC. Editing functions such as split, splice, delete, merge, and transitions can also be performed within the camcorder before dubbing for additional functionality. The Transcoding feature allows for the camcorder to transfer full HD videos off the HDD or SDHC card to standard definition DVD discs for the sharing of videos with friends and family who may not own a Blu-ray player yet. Another new feature added to this year’s camcorder is face detection, which automatically detects and focuses on faces to provide the most true to life color accuracy and clarity. Additionally, Hitachi has developed a compact, low power consumption, quiet and highly reliable 8cm BD/DVD drive, which results in a 20% reduction in overall volume compared with last year’s DZ-BD7HA Blu-ray hybrid camcorder. “Hitachi is well known for having introduced the world’s first DVD camcorder, the world’s first Hybrid camcorder with a DVD drive and a Hard Disk Drive and the world’s first Blu-ray camcorder,” said Daniel Lee, Vice President of Marketing at Hitachi Home Electronics, America. “Hitachi continues to improve upon and deliver cutting-edge and innovative products, and is pleased to offer the latest upgrades in camcorder technology to its customers and consumers. The new DZ-BD10HA underscores Hitachi’s commitment to developing original technologies that consumers can easily embrace.” While keeping the same core design as the previous Blu-ray camcorder, the DZ-BD10HA has several added features and an ameliorated design. These features include: - Three Format Hybrid Compatibility: This camcorder has the versatility of being able to record HD video onto three separate formats (Blu-ray Disc, Hard Drive, SDHC) and provides the flexibility and ease of playback and long recording time all in one camcorder.
- 7 Mega Pixel CMOS Image Sensor: The CMOS image sensor in this camcorder is designed to record the highest resolution video with effective 4.67 mega pixels while minimizing distortion and artifacts to ensure the most clear and vibrant high definition picture. The camcorder is also capable of capturing 6.22 mega pixel stills onto an optional SD or SDHC card.
