Final Cut Studio 3 First Look: Apple Ignores DVD Studio Pro Again, but Debuts (Modest) Blu-ray Support, New HD Codecs

By now you've heard that there's a new version of Final Cut Studio shipping from Apple, aptly called "the New Final Cut Studio." What's new? Well, it starts with a new price of $999, $300 less than Final Cut Studio 2. You can upgrade to the new suite from any previous version, even Final Cut Pro 1.0, for $299. All suite components were upgraded (to varying degrees) except for DVD Studio Pro—which, as you may recall, wasn't upgraded in the previous suite either. Fear not, however (are you sitting down?): The suite upgrade does enable a modest level of Blu-ray Disc authoring. More on that later.

There are more than 100 new features spread over the suite, but here I'll focus on Final Cut Pro and Compressor. Although I had a 2-hour product briefing from Apple, I couldn't actually test the product before submitting this column, so I'm simply reporting what I saw and heard.

The first key thing to note about Final Cut Pro is that the interface is unchanged. As for new features, the most significant is a Share option that lets you produce a new range of outputs right from the timeline, including Blu-ray Discs, various quality levels of YouTube and MobileMe output, as well as any setting created in Compressor. You can batch your outputs, but what's really neat is that all rendering occurs in the background so you can keep working in Final Cut Pro after you share the timeline. No more creating QuickTime reference movies and loading them separately into Compressor.

Also significant are three new flavors of ProRes. At the high end, there's a new ProRes 4444 (330Mbps at 1080p), and there are two lower-bitrate versions: ProRes 422LT (100Mbps at 1080p) and ProRes 422 Proxy (45Mbps at 1080p). During the demo, the Apple rep showed me side-by-side versions of an original test video and ProRes versions all the way down to Proxy, and the videos appeared visually identical as I stood about 3' from the monitor.

As the Apple rep explained, ProRes 4444 (the last 4 is for alpha channel) is for post houses that need a high-quality intermediate format with alpha channel, while the lower-bitrate versions are targeted at AVCHD and HDV producers. I challenged the need for the latter, commenting that Final Cut Pro edited HDV very efficiently in my projects and tests. That's true, the product manager agreed, before telling me something I didn't know.

The product manager explained that Final Cut Pro's ability to work with multiple cores is usually limited by the codec used for preview and, ultimately, rendering. Final Cut Pro uses a very limited number of cores for HDV but can implement all available cores for ProRes, which should make all previews and even final rendering much faster. Of course, before the upgrade, the most efficient version of ProRes costs you about 150Mbps, six times more than HDV, which is a stiff price to pay. I'll be eager to try the 422LT and Proxy versions in my next HDV project. While discussing new format support, I should note that Apple has also included support for AVC-Intra in Final Cut Pro and Color 1.5.

Let's get back to Blu-ray for a moment. When I say Final Cut Studio now incorporates a modest level of Blu-ray Disc authoring, I mean multiple HD menu presets and the ability to create your own presets in Motion, with automatic chapter menus created for all menu markers. I don't think you get menu branching, and you certainly don't get the pop-up Blu-ray menus available in Adobe Encore CS4 (see my tutorial in the November 2008 issue). Still, what you get is sufficient for most corporate and indie productions, which appear to be Apple's targets. You can also record AVCHD discs with menus on legacy DVD recorders, which can contain up to about 40 minutes of HD video and can play on many Blu-ray players.

Also new is the ability to share a project preview via iChat, complete with timecodes. This function transmits the output of either the preview monitor or the viewer to an iChat client, complete with timecode, so you can easily preview and discuss the project with a remote client or collaborator. The iChat quality looked extremely good, and the display seemed very responsive even though the iChat client connected via wireless.

There's also a keyframeable speed adjustment utility that's much easier to use than the older slo-mo effect, which required an engineering degree to figure out. It's the first speed tool I've seen that has a "ripple" option, which lets you decide whether to push back subsequent clips on the timeline when you slow a clip down or to simply fill the same space with the slower video.

Since you can access any Compressor preset from Final Cut Pro's Share feature (and render in the background), you probably won't use Compressor to render files produced in Final Cut Pro. In addition to encoding stand-alone files from other sources, you'll primarily use Compressor to create presets. Apple has added a neat "auto-detect" setting that lets you easily create a preset from any existing encoded file, as well as enhanced droplets that you can tweak outside of Compressor.

The enhancements to Final Cut Pro and Compressor alone will make it hard for serious producers to resist the lure of this new version, and few should. It's a release packed with utility at a very aggressive price.

Atlona Releases New HDMI and DVI Cables with Swivel Connectors Designed for Mounted HDTVs

HDTV owners placing plasma on the newest slim profile mounts proliferating the market are faced with issues when connecting standard HDMI cables to rear-facing HDMI ports. The average HDMI cable connector combined with limited cable flexibility near the connector ends can extend up to two and a half inches from the HDMI port. This limited distance requires users to either use mounts or risk damaging their cable as well as their televisions HDMI port. Atlona Technologies has developed a line of HDMI 1.3b cables that cut the distance needed for the HDMI connector ends by more than 50%, extending just over 1 inch from an HDMI port.

Atlona’s hew HDMI and DVI to HDMI cables feature a swivel connector end which allow them to bend at a 90 degrees in either direction. This new connector allows users to nearly flush mount their HDTVs. "This is another product designed to solve a specific problem that a affects a lot of HDTV owners," says Michael Khain, who heads up Atlona’s Product Development Department.

Atlona Technologies has held true to their motto of being a solutions based manufacturer since its inception, making products that resolve problems. Abandoning the "good, better, best" product strategy that has ruled the AV accessory market for years, Atlona Technologies has surpassed such standards, providing high quality products typically missing in most AV systems. These new swivel connector cables fall right in line with Atlona’s market strategy of providing solutions that serve every market from Professional to Residential AV.

Atlona’s new line of swivel connector HDMI and DVI cables include models AT14035-X (HDMI) and AT14022-X (DVI to HDMI). They are expected to start shipping by July 27, 2009 starting at $34.99 MSRP.

Rentrak Adds Blu-Ray Disc Component to Screen Media DVD Revenue Sharing Program

Rentrak Corporation (Nasdaq: RENT), a leader in multi-screen media measurement serving the entertainment and advertising industries, today announced the addition of a Blu-ray Disc "BD" component to the company's existing Screen Media DVD revenue sharing program. Consumers Still Buying Consumer Electronics in a Down Economy, CEA Forecast Finds

Consumers continue to buy technology products to improve their lives, although the consumer electronics (CE) industry will see overall shipment revenues decline in 2009, according to new data released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®. The semi-annual U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecast shows that industry revenues will contract to $165 billion in 2009 but grow slightly in 2010.

The consumer electronics industry will see shipment revenues fall 7.7 percent, to $165 billion this year, the first decline since 2001. While consumer demand for CE products remains high, several market forces are contributing to lower revenues, including lower consumer spending, price declines and compositional shifts in key product categories. As consumer confidence rebuilds, industry revenues will grow, albeit at a pace of less than one percent in 2010. CEA’s forecast projects industry revenues will bottom out by the second half of 2009, although many risk factors remain causing industry growth to remain muted.

The CE industry continues to hold up favorably compared with other industries. Most recessions are marked by steep declines in durable goods purchases as individuals defer discretionary purchases that can be pushed into the future. Despite the worst recession since the Great Depression, CE spending as a percentage of all durable goods is as high as it has been in 50 years. Vehicle sales are down 40 percent since the recession began in the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Autodata Corporation, and existing home sales are down 34 percent from their peak in August 2005, according to the National Association of Realtors.

"The CE industry is not impervious to the economic downturn but remains resilient compared to other industries," said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. "Through innovation and global access to consumers and open markets, technology companies will restore economic growth and prosperity. American consumers continue to purchase CE products despite cutting back in many areas, showing that consumer electronics are vital to everyday life in this country."

Digital displays continue to be the primary revenue driver for the industry, comprising 15 percent of overall industry sales. Unit shipments of displays remain robust, projected to be up eight percent in 2009. LCDs remain the display of choice for consumers with unit volumes jumping 24 percent. Lower price points and an increase in consumer demand for mid-size displays are reducing revenue. TV display shipment revenues are expected to drop six percent this year to $24 billion.

One year after emerging as the next-generation DVD format of choice, Blu-ray players are poised for growth in 2009. Unit shipments of Blu-ray players will jump 112 percent this year, reaching nearly six million. Even as prices drop, revenues are expected to top one billion dollars, an increase of 48 percent over 2008.

Continued innovation in the smartphone category is leading to high consumer demand and increased shipment revenues. Smartphone shipment revenues will increase almost three percent in 2009, to nearly $14 billion, despite declines in average unit prices. Smartphones will account for one in four total handset sales this year as consumers continue to seek devices capable of Internet access, navigation and media playback while on the go.

CEA’s updated sales and forecast also shows netbook momentum is building within the PC category. Unit shipments are forecasted to nearly double in 2009, rising 85 percent, to eight and a half million units. Even as more consumers opt for lower-priced netbooks, the category will reach $3.4 billion in revenue in 2009.

"Consumers continue to buy CE products at high rates, showing that CE is a must-have even during the darkest of economic times," said Steve Koenig, CEA director of industry analysis. "Notably, consumers are buying CE products that fit today’s budget, like mid-sized displays, netbooks and private label products. Some categories, such as digital cameras, Mp3 players and video game consoles, have reached maturation as most American homes now include such devices."

U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecasts 2005-2010 (July 2009) is published twice a year, in January and July. It was designed and formulated by CEA, the most comprehensive source of sales data, forecasts, consumer research and historical trends for the consumer electronics industry. Please cite any information to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®. The complete report is available free to CEA member companies. Non-members may purchase the study for $2,000 exclusively at mycea.CE.org.
