Verbatim Announces New DigitalMovie DVD Recordable Discs

Verbatim Corporation has announced a new family of DigitalMovie 1X-4X speed DVD Recordable media with the unique look of a movie reel, a matching DVD sibling to Verbatim's popular Digital Vinyl CD-R discs that look like 45 RPM records. Verbatim DigitalMovie discs are available in 3-packs with a choice of 4.7GB DVD-R or DVD+R media packaged in clear DVD Super Jewel Box cases.

Verbatim's unique DigitalMovie DVD Recordable discs are designed to put the fun in recording, viewing, and sharing home movies. Verbatim also says the discs are "ideal" for backing up DVD-Video titles and transferring video tapes to optical media that won't degrade over time. Consumers can also use the discs with compatible personal video recorders (PVRs) to standardize the look of their recorded videos in clear, DVD-Video-sized jewel boxes.

Designed to fit easily in most DVD video racks, the Super Jewel Box measures 7.5" x 5.6" x 0.4"--the same height as a VHS cassette and the same thin profile as a standard jewel case. The Super Jewel Box is manufactured with a crystal-clear polystyrene material that is more durable than a standard jewel case. With clear visibility of all four spines, users can read the DVD label without opening the case.

To produce 4X-speed discs with exceptional reliability and compatibility, the new media incorporates materials and manufacturing technologies developed by Verbatim's parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM).

Verbatim DigitalMovie 4x DVD+R and DVD-R discs are based on MKM's Metal Azo recording dye technology. DigitalMovie DVD media are manufactured utilizing Ultra-Precise Molding (UPM) technology which is designed to produce very flat discs, and guarantee stable, high-speed rotation during the reading and writing process. Backed by a lifetime warranty, Verbatim DigitalMovie DVD-R and DVD+R media are expected to have a street price of about $11.99 per 3-pack.

Philips Announces New CPU for Next-Generation of Nexperia Media Processors

Royal Philips Electronics has announced a new TriMedia Central Processing Unit (CPU) core to be used in the next generation of Philips' Nexperia media processors. Philips' new super-pipelined TriMedia CPU is aimed at enhancing the performance of Audio/Video applications. It achieves over 500mHz speed with a fully synthesizable design, allowing for efficient system-on-chip (SoC) integration. Armed with this high-performance CPU core, Philips is targeting its next-generation of media processors for connected home entertainment applications, including connected high-definition displays, home media servers, personal video recorders (PVRs), and video over wireless 802.11 network adaptors. Philips' next-generation of Nexperia media processors based on the super-pipelined TriMedia CPU will be unveiled the first half of 2004.

The TriMedia CPU is C-programmable and can support all leading audio and video standards, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DV, H.263, and DivX-5. New instructions specifically optimize H.264 decoding. It supports video encoding into MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and DivX formats, making it ideal for PVRs. The ability to transcode from one video format to another supports the design of media gateway products. Furthermore, HDTV decoding with simultaneous picture-in-picture display is enabled using a dedicated HD accelerator. The TriMedia CPU can decode HDTV video while simultaneously encoding an MPEG stream. This allows the design of the HDTV displays with Flash card-based PVR capability.
