NEC Releases LCD3000 30-inch Display

NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America, Inc., has announced its plans to launch an expansive 30-inch LCD display (29.5 viewable image size) for the information display market.  As the largest screen size LCD display widely available, the NEC LCD3000 bridges the gap between flat panels designed for the desktop and those intended for large presentation venues.  Utilizing advanced LCD technologies from NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display, the NEC LCD3000 provides larger, eye-catching images for a wide range of applications including conference rooms, airports, public information kiosks, retail signage, financial exchange and trade show exhibits. With a high resolution of 1280 x 768 and wide aspect ratio, the NEC LCD3000 renders precise text, images and video for clear viewing of applications such as presentations, charts, advertisements and pricing.  The new LCD monitor enables spectators to distinguish images with ease by delivering superior gray scale and vivid colors at a brightness of 450 cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 350:1.  Using NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display's Rapid Response technology, the NEC LCD3000 operates at 25ms to facilitate full-motion video, while virtually eliminating 'ghosting' or 'image trailing.' As the display does not use phosphors in its construction, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display also eliminates the possibility of images being permanently burned into the screen when left on the display for long periods of time, thereby contributing to optimal screen performance and longer life for the display. The NEC LCD3000 display settings are easily manipulated by remote diagnostics and remote control capabilities using a local area network or signal cable, through a Display Data Channel/Command Interface (DDC/CI) function or RS-232 connector.  The ability to effectively manage multiple monitors from a distant control room enables information display administrators to create a more productive computing environment.  The NEC LCD3000 retains sharp images at up to 100 meters/326 feet by utilizing NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display's CableComp technology, which prevents image degradation from long cables.  It automatically compensates for video signal delays and irregular red, green and blue cable transmissions, as well as enhancing the VGA video signal to prevent blurred images.

Apple Announces Firmware Update for iMacs with SuperDrives

Apple has announced the availability of a firmware update for the Pioneer SuperDrive DVD drives in its iMacs. The update will prevent the drives from being damaged by attempts to use high-speed (4X) DVD discs. While the drives still won't be able to write at 4X speed, the update allows the drives to use 4X media for 2X recording without incident. Pioneer first announced the need for an update in October. The DVD Forum has established new standards for high-speed recordable discs (4X for DVD-R and 2X for DVD-RW). Various media manufacturers have begun production of these discs that will soon be available in the marketplace. The source of the problem is a firmware "bug" in certain Pioneer DVD-R/RW recorders and drives, and not with the high-speed media itself. As a result, use of the new high-speed discs for recording on these particular Pioneer products may cause damage to both the loaded disc and to the drive/recorder. The following drives and recorders may be affected:

* Pioneer DVR-7000 DVD recorder
* Pioneer PRV-9000 Professional DVD recorder
* Pioneer DVR-A03 computer drive
* Pioneer DVR-103 comuter drive
* Pioneer DVR-A04 computer drive
* Pioneer DVR-104 computer drive

In addition to the above models, certain OEM computer systems containing Pioneer-manufactured DVD-R/RW drives are affected. Anyone who owns or uses any of the above-listed products should conduct the free firmware update immediately, prior to using the new high-speed media. While the aforementioned drives will still be unable to record at 4X, the firmware update will prevent them from being damaged by attempting to record at 2X on 4X media. Drives supporting DVD-RAM and + RW formats are not affected by this issue.
