DVD Workshop 2 gives creative professionals a way to produce professional DVDs with a minimal learning curve. This DVD authoring software is unique in the professional DVD authoring space for combining a straightforward workflow and built-in design tools with professional DVD authoring features.

These include multiple subtitle and audio tracks for alternate music and language, playlists for complex navigation, as well as support for Digital Linear Tape (DLT) for replication and dual layer DVDs (DVD-9) for large projects. DVD Workshop 2 is available at www.ulead.com for $495. DVD Workshop 2 will also be available through video resellers nationwide by mid-February. For upgrade pricing, a list of video resellers, and other information go to www.ulead.com.

To save disc space and create intricate menu navigation, playlist creation lets users link a sequence of assets-movies, menus, and chapter points—to buttons without duplicating assets. Creative professionals can even replicate DVD titles with Workshop's support for Digital Linear Tape (DLT), and dual layer DVDs (DVD-9) for replicating discs with double the capacity. DVD Workshop 2 offers copyright protection with support for Macrovision and CSS formats, and control over which geographic region can view DVD titles with region coding.

Aurora Introduces Diversity Compact Converters and Distribution Amplifiers

Aurora Video Systems has announced the first products in the company's new Diversity family of compact digital video converters and distribution amplifiers (DAs), affordable solutions for high-quality signal conversion and transfer between digital and analog capture, editing, and playback devices. The three products announced include a 10-bit SDI-to-YPrPb converter, a 10-bit YPrPb-to-SDI converter, and a 10-bit SDI DA, all of which are stand-alone, DC-powered cubes measuring approximately 3" x 4". and 1" in height.

These lightweight standalone converters may be placed on a table or in the user's rack, or mounted to the back of decks and monitors. The two converters feature high precision, 12-bit DACs and 12-bit ADCs capable of meeting both NTSC and PAL SMPTE 259M 4:2:2 standards. The SDI-to-YPrPb converter includes an auxiliary reclocked SDI output for connecting downstream digital devices, and the YPrPb to SDI converter offers 16X oversampled inputs and includes two SDI outputs. Aurora's new 10-bit SDI DA provides one SDI input and four equalized SDI outputs. The system's input automatically locks to any of four SMPTE 259M data rates (143, 177, 270, and 360 Mb/s). All SDI inputs can automatically equalize up to 300 m of coaxial cable or up to 120 m of Cat 5 UTP cable.

MPEG LA Sues Apex Digital, Inc. for Breach of MPEG-2 License Agreement

MPEG LA, LLC announced that it has sued Apex Digital, Inc., a manufacturer and supplier of DVD players, for breach of its contractual obligations under the MPEG-2 Patent Portfolio License that Apex Digital entered into with MPEG LA. The lawsuit alleges that Apex Digital has breached the Contract by failing to report fully its use of MPEG-2 patents; failing to pay the royalty payments due for the use of those patents; and failing to provide an auditor with all of the documents required by the Contract for a complete audit to independently determine Apex Digital's compliance with the Contract.

The suit notes that Apex Digital's reports of product sales to MPEG LA are not consistent with public reports of Apex Digital's sales of those products. The lawsuit brought in U.S. District Court in Colorado seeks monetary damages including interest, an accounting of all Apex Digital products on which royalties are payable, an audit of Apex Digital's books and records, and an injunction prohibiting Apex Digital from using MPEG-2 patents in its products until Apex Digital pays all royalties that it owes to MPEG LA.

Pixel Farm Ships PFBarnVersion 1.0

The Pixel Farm, a new company focused on innovation in the field of high-end digital post-production, announces the release of the new image modeling application, PFBarn 1.0. Available immediately, PFBarn allows the placing of geometry, the reconstruction of meshes and the extraction, mapping and rebuilding of textures from a 2D still or moving source. PFBarn is designed for industries such as architectural visualisation, game development and CG pre-visualisation.

Data generated in PFTrack and PFMatch is exported to PFBarn allowing users to quickly build up 3D environments with a simple set of primitives and modeling tools, using the background plate for reference. The advanced image modeling algorithms calculate camera perspective and movement and match these variables with any placed geometry from a single point of view. Thus a cube placed in an environment will exactly match a cube in a still image or video sequence.
