Microboards Announces CD/DVD Printer

Microboards Technology has formed an alliance with HP's Specialty Printing System Operation (SPS) to develop a CD and DVD inkjet printer with the highest throughput on the market. Targeted at users with high volume, fast turnaround requirements, the printer is capable of 4800 x 1200 dpi print resolution, the highest available in CD and DVD printing. Microboards combined their patented autoloading system with HP's new inkjet printer engine to give users the highest output possible, both in image resolution and print speed.  Since Print Factory is an autoloading printer, no calibration of robotics or manual feeding of discs is required. Print Factory connects by USB or Parallel interface to the computer, and comes with label design software.  While Print Factory was designed to fill a need in the high-volume arena, it also has the ability to print at 4800 x 1200 dpi on both DVD and CD media. With the included design software, users can enjoy its benefits whether making a few discs or a few hundred.  Print Factory is capable of producing up to 200 discs per hour. In addition, Print Factory uses standard HP color and black ink cartridges. The cartridges have a very high yield at a competitive cost, which allows for printing costs of a few pennies per disc.  Print Factory will begin shipping in Mid-November.

Verbatim Launches 4X DVD+R Write-once Media

With the announcement of 4X-speed DataLifePlus 4.7GB DVD+R media, Verbatim Corporation becomes the first media manufacturer to offer DVD+R that supports 1x, 2.4X and 4X write speeds. At 4X speed (44 megabits per second or about 36x CD-R performance), a 4.7GB DVD+R disc can be filled to capacity in about 15 minutes. Verbatim has already provided its new media to major drive manufacturers and will coordinate media shipping with the arrival of the first drives that support the new 4X DVD+R speeds. The drives are expected to be available in December. The key component in achieving 4X speed DVD+R media is
DYN-AZO technology, a proprietary recording layer technology developed by
Verbatim's parent company, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC). By using the
proven dye technology incorporated in its 2.4X DVD+R media as the platform for the new, more sensitive DYN AZO technology, Verbatim engineers not only achieved 4X +R write speed, they ensured that the new media will sustain 1x and 2.4X
recording compatibility.

Consumer Purchase Of Flat-Screen Monitors, PDAs, and MP3 Players "On the Rise" According to IntelliQuest Study

Although the current state of the overall technology market remains uncertain, Millward Brown IntelliQuest's recently released study measuring the product purchase behavior and media habits of technology influencers (CIMS v9.0) indicates increased plans for purchasing within several technology categories. For example, on the consumer side, newer technologies such as flat-screen monitors showed increased intent to purchase with six million indicating plans to purchase in the next 12 months as opposed to the 3.7 million "intending to purchase" reported in the 2001 study (CIMS v8.0). Desktop-driven video/photo add-on technologies such as digital cameras and video editing software showed purchase increases in the past twelve months. MP3 players, notebook/personal computers, multifunction printers, and PDAs/palmtop/handheld/computers show increase purchase intent from study to study. It is clear that from the report that home users are interested in faster connectivity to the Web. DSL and cable are on the rise by 6 percent and 3 percent respectively, while telephone (modem) connections are on the decline, dropping from 68 percent to 61 percent. On the business side, this year's findings showed that the number of those who make technology purchase decisions decreased by 10.3 percent when compared to findings from last year's study. Along with the shrinking of the market from 52.6 million to 47 million, the study shows a shift in responsibilities of those who survived downsizing. As a percentage, both the MIS/IT and senior management segments seem to now be shouldering more responsibility, perhaps reflective of tighter budgetary controls at top levels.

Media 100 Inc., a leading provider of advanced media systems, has announced 844/Xi, a product-line expansion of the Company's award-winning 844/X editing system for lightning-fast compositing of unlimited layers. The affordably priced 844/Xi targets the marketplace of dual-stream editors by giving them integrated real-time compositing and myriad real-time effects possibilities, integrated with powerful editorial capabilities, and all with 10-bit precision.  The power and value of 844/Xi emanates from the GenesisEngine, a media supercomputer itself powered by the Foss, Holmes, and Hatalsky silicon processors, the company's transistor-level blueprint for image processing that is real time (nonlinear).  The multi-stream GenesisEngine is a breakthrough that directly supports several other important 844/Xi processing capabilities:
o On up to four streams, two video and two full-motion alpha, 844/Xi can
process in real time, in any combination: digital video effects (DVEs);
standard blend (transfer) modes; filters; color corrections; color effects;

time in real time. There is no host-based rendering. 844/Xi gives artists
and editors a fast, interactive experience working on projects of any
vertical depth. 844/Xi is not limited to processing a fixed number of
streams.

layers called Visual Voicing_. This powerful capability enables editors to
view any two layers in a multi-layer composition, change them, view the
changes processing or rendering.

844/Xi will ship with the new 844/X Version 1.5 Interoperability Release
announced in September at IBC in Amsterdam. This new 844/X software release
incorporates several new features, including OMF compatibility with Avid
Symphony, Avid Media Composer, Digidesign Pro Tools, Apple Final Cut Pro
and Media 100 i, as well as 844/X timeline export to Adobe After Effects,
