SpectSoft announces shipment of RaveHD

SpectSoft, LLC has released the next generation of video disk recorder software running on Linux. RaveHD is the second generation of video disk recording software geared towards high end visual effects and post production workflows. By utilizing an open source model, the Linux operating system, and commodity PC hardware, RaveHD allows its users to leverage the entire gamut of Linux-based tools as well as minimizing total cost of ownership.

RaveHD is data agnostic, in that it scales from standard definition all the way to dual link (4:4:4 RGB) high definition video. This is dependent only on the hardware running inside the PC. Due to it's Linux based, open source nature the software has been written to utilize a standard XFS filesystem as well as standard image file formats. This allows users to quickly access it's content via any common file transfer protocol. Also, since the source code to the software is available to the customer, the level of customization and integration far surpasses that of any of it's proprietary counterparts. RaveHD is now directly available from SpectSoft, LLC.

Optibase Introduces MXF Technology for Its Encoding Platform

Optibase, Ltd., a leader in digital video encoding and streaming solutions, has announced the implementation of MXF (Material eXchange Format) on the MPEG MovieMaker 200S Publisher, Optibase's MPEG-2 encoding platform. Also, Optibase, Ltd. and LSI Logic Corporation announced the implementation of Sony MPEG IMX Technology on the same encoding platform.

With these additions, the MPEG MovieMaker 200S Publisher with the MPEG Composer 200 becomes a key component of ingest systems for TV production, enabling the capture of high-quality video files for later retrieval and editing.

Hitachi Shows Hard Drive Prowess without More Storage Capacity

In its next-generation disk-based storage technology for notebooks, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is looking beyond capacity to advance the art of hard disk drives. With storage-capacity leadership securely under its belt, Hitachi GST is introducing the new Travelstar 4K40--not bigger, just better.

As a leader in both 2.5-inch technology and segment share, Hitachi GST is making a bold move in the mainstream notebook hard drive space by putting capacity aside for the moment to boost all aspects of reliability. Hitachi's new 40GB, 4200 RPM hard drive is a reliability-focused product.

Hitachi customers agree that for the majority of notebook users, 40GB remains a popular capacity point. What customers want, in addition, is a more rugged hard drive in high volume. The Travelstar 4K40 is in direct response to that customer request. Improving internal hard drive reliability is a strong indicator of the drives' ruggedness and performance in the field. With the Travelstar 4K40, Hitachi is meeting customer demand for both reliability and strong supply.

The Travelstar 4K40, shipping today, is available in 20, 30 and 40 GB capacities. The 4K40 product line is a companion line to the Hitachi Travelstar 80GN and 4K80 family of 4200 RPM 2.5-inch hard drives. Customers needing higher capacities can continue to select from the 80GN or 4K80 lines, offering up to 80 GB of capacity.

Samsung Announces Dual Voltage MultiMediaCards

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in advanced semiconductor memory technology, has announced a full line of Dual Voltage MultiMediaCards (DV-MMC) that support lower voltage requirements for next generation media-rich mobile appliances such as digital cameras and mobile handsets. Representing a 70 percent decrease from the conventional 80mA, the 1.8V and 3.3V dual voltage feature extends battery usage by enabling mobile applications to write and read data at a low 20mA.

Handset manufacturers are now designing MMC and RS-MMC into their next generation handsets. Samsung's new DV-MMC line up consists of nine variations in density and size: 512-,256-,128-,64-,32MB DV-MMCs and 256-,128-,64-,32MB Dual Voltage-Reduced Size-MMCs (DV-RS-MMC).

Key to 2.5G and 3G mobile handsets is memory cards that can store and transmit high-density video images and pictures. The 128MB and higher density MMCs can store and read data at 1.9MB/sec, providing real-time sequential video recording of VGA quality images. The 512MB card can store 500 picture images in three-megapixel resolution, 30 minutes of VGA resolution video images, or eight hours of MP3 quality music files.
