Proximity Announces VideoRipper

Developed to provide superior video output quality and an expanded feature set than capture and encoding solutions currently designed for post production and duplication, Proximity has announced the introduction of the VideoRipper video ingestion system. Proximity, a leading media asset management company serving the television, film, and post production industries, will introduce and demonstrate VideoRipper in the company's booth at NAB 2004 (Booth #SU9600) in Las Vegas.

VideoRipper allows users to capture video from tape and encode to frame-accurate MPEG or GXF video files with or without an accompanying program slate--in a single operation. VideoRipper also generates the associated metadata and publishes clips directly to a Proximity Artbox content management system or FTP server--all from one computer running anywhere on the network.

VideoRipper can capture video from any tape deck supporting Sony's 9-Pin RS422 protocol using SDI, composite video, or component video. VideoRipper supports a large number of encoding formats, including broadcast-quality MPEGs, GXFs, and IMX, and consistently generates superior quality video compared to alternate solutions. VideoRipper streamlines the workflow in dubbing facilities and post-production houses by allowing users to remotely configure and manage multiple tape transfers in a secure, password-protected environment.

InterVideo Demonstrates InstantON's New WMA 9 Playback Capabilities at IDF

InterVideo, Inc., the company that first ported Microsoft Windows Media Technology to Linux-based CE devices, has announced the successful demonstration of InterVideo InstantON's new Windows Media Audio (WMA) 9 playback support at the Intel Developer Forum Japan, which was held at the Hilton Tokyo Bay Hotel April 7-8, 2004.

The WMA 9 format has become increasingly popular because is combines high-quality sound with small file sizes--users can store more than 22 hours of music playback on a single CD. InterVideo InstantON is a modular solution that brings the benefits of consumer electronic (CE) devices to a PC, turning it into a cost-effective home entertainment center with an access time of about 10 seconds and remote control.

With InterVideo InstantON's dual-boot configuration, a single PC can be used for both computing tasks and entertainment. It also enables consumers to share digital music and video files between Windows and Linux-based environments. When access to work-related files on the PC is required, users simply switch to the Windows mode (which requires the full Windows load time).

The current version of InstantON supports playback of MP3-CDs with rich surround sound; playback of DVD-Video, VCD, and SVCD videos with outstanding clarity; plus TV viewing and recording capabilities that consumers can enjoy from the comfort of their living room couch. InstantON can also be used for time-shifting capabilities that allow users to pause and replay live TV and record favorite shows for later viewing.

InterVideo InstantON is currently available from InterVideo only to OEMs for evaluation and integration and is not sold as stand-alone retail software. The modular nature of the product enables OEMs and middleware developers to create customized solutions and to incorporate only the features that are required for a particular device.

Sake-Soaked Wood Cone Speakers Featured in New JVC Desktop Audio System

Consumer electronics manufacturer JVC has announced plans to offer a desktop audio system next month that includes speakers made from sheets of birch to take advantage of the material's desirable sonic qualities. The innovation was 20 years in the making because forming the wood sheets into a speaker cone proved daunting--they would crack or split when stamped. The solution turned out to be sake--Japanese rice wine.

A JVC audio engineer in Japan hit upon the sake solution while enjoying dried squid at a restaurant. He asked if anything special was done to make the dried squid so chewy. It was soaked in sake, he was told. Inspired, the JVC team tried the same technique with the wood sheets. It worked--after soaking in sake, the sheets could be pressed into speaker cones without splitting.

The solid wood cones are featured in JVC's new EX-A1, an elegantly designed desktop music system. The wood provides an ideal combination of high sound propagation speed and high internal loss, allowing the speaker to naturally reproduce a wide frequency range. With conventional paper cones, sound spreads at the same speed in all directions, causing unnatural resonant points with limited frequency response. Wood cones produce few resonant points because of the grain, so frequency response is improved and sound quality is significantly enhanced. JVC engineers tried several types of wood, but birch proved to have the best acoustic properties.

The EX-A1 handles nearly every popular digital format, including DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, DVD-R/-RW, CD, SVCD/VCD, CD-R/RW, MP3, and JPEG, plus there is a built-in FM/AM tuner. The unit includes Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, a high output 192kHz/24-bit audio D/A converter, and screw-type speaker terminals for the best possible connection. Composite, S-Video, and component video outputs guarantee compatibility with nearly any television monitor currently in use, and a subwoofer output makes it easy to add an outboard subwoofer for rich, room-rattling bass. Power output is rated at 30 watts per channel minimum. The EX-A1 will be available in May at a nationally advertised value of $550.00.
