Sony Announces Free 4X DVD+R Upgrade for Dual RW Drives

The Dual RW DVD/CD recordable drives recently introduced by Sony Electronics will soon support up to 4X DVD+R recording with a simple firmware upgrade. Owners of the internal DRU-500A or external DRX-500UL Dual RW drive will be able to download the free upgrade from Sony's Web site at http://sony.storagesupport.com/freeupgrade on or before Dec. 9. The firmware upgrade will add support for up to 4X DVD+R recording and will enhance DVD reading performance, making the Dual RW drives even more appealing to users seeking a high-performance DVD burner that supports all of the leading DVD formats (DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW) as well as 24X CD-R recording, at a reasonable price. With up to 4X DVD+R recording speeds, users will be able to record a full 4.7GB DVD+R disc in less than 15 minutes.  The specification standard for 4X DVD+R recording was recently made available, and utilizing the free firmware upgrade, Sony's Dual RW drives will be the first to support it.  4X DVD+R media is expected to become commercially available before the end of this year.  The DRU-500A and DRX-500UL DVD/CD rewritable drives are currently available through nationwide resellers and retailers, mail order catalogs, and select online shopping sites, including SonyStyle.com.  The DRU-500A model is available for an estimated price of under $350, while the external DRX-500UL is available for less than $430.

Sigma Designs and Vweb Introduce First MPEG-4 PVR Reference Design

Sigma Designs, a leader in IP video streaming solutions, and Vweb, a leading provider of MPEG video compression and broadband video networking technologies, have announced an MPEG-4-capable personal video recorder (PVR) reference design. Named Rhapsody, the design uses Vweb's VW2005 MPEG-1, 2, and 4 encoder chip from Vweb, and EM8475 decoder chip from Sigma Designs. This new reference design enables manufacturers to add PVR functionality to their advanced set-top box products. A hardware and software reference design kit, Rhapsody accelerates the development of set-top boxes and consumer products that include high-quality digital video recording and time-shifting functions. These devices offer consumers full control over their viewing experience by providing pause, instant record, and other time-shifting features during live broadcasts, as well as offering the ability to record one or more programs at specified times in advance. The Rhapsody Reference Design Kit will be offered by Sigma Designs in January 2003 for $5,000, including a board, software SDK, schematics, Gerber files, and a bill of materials. Rhapsody will be available in January 2003.

Intel Delivers Hyper-Threading Technology With 3gHz Pentium 4 Processor

Intel Corporation has introduced Hyper-Threading (HT) Technology for the new Intel Pentium 4 processor at 3.06gHz. HT Technology enables a new class of high-performance desktop PCs that can work quickly among several computing applications at the same time, or provide extra performance for individual software programs that are multithreaded. HT Technology can boost PC performance by up to 25 percent. HT Technology brings increased performance to computer users in two ways: using multithreaded software or using software in a multitasking environment. Software applications that have been written to use multiple pieces of code called "threads" view the Pentium 4 processor at 3.06gHz with HT Technology as two processors. HT Technology allows the processor to work on two separate threads at the same time rather than one at a time. Mixing music and editing video at the same time is 21 percent faster with this new technology vs. a 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 processor-based system without HT Technology. Systems based on the Pentium 4 processor at 3.06 GHz supporting HT Technology are available now. Intel is also shipping boxed Intel Pentium 4 processors up to 3.06gHz; ricing for the 3.06gHz Pentium 4 processor at 3.06 GHz is $637 in 1000-unit quantities.

Addonics DVD DigiCopier Simplifies DVD and CD Copying

Addonics has announced the DVD DigiCopier, a multi-interface DVD/CD duplicator that can be used as a standalone copying station. To copy DVDs or CDs users just need to place the master DVD/CD into the source drive located at the top of the unit, load blank media in the destination drive, and wait a few minutes to copy a 650MB CD or about 30 minutes for a full 4.7GB DVD. In addition to standalone duplication, the DigiCopier can also serve as an external DVD-R/RW drive. Among the many advanced features on the DVD DigiCopier are automatic format detection, which detects DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, and CD-RW media to make the drive perform at the maximum speed of the media. In addition, the DVD DigiCopier can be connected to either a USB, FireWire port, or PCMCIA (PC Card) slot. Interface cables are all interchangeable with every unit and different interface cables can be ordered separately. The Addonics DVD DigiCopier includes the DVD DigiCopier drive; AC/DC Power cord; DVD/CD Mastering software for Windows 98SE, ME, NT, 2000, and XP; and an interface cable with choice of USB 2.0, FireWire, or CardBus. The DVD-ROM source drive of the DVD DigiCopier operates at 16X Maximum. The destination drive is a Pioneer A05 DVD-R/RW device which records at 4X for DVD-R, 2X for DVD-RW, 16X for CD-R, and 32X for CD-RW. Data transfer rates vary depending on the type of interface used. The small-footprint duplicator weighs just 10.03 lbs and measures 7.5 wide x 10.63 deep x 6.75 inches high. List price of the Addonics DVD DigiCopier is $699 with USB 2.0 interface cable or $729 with FireWire interface cable. Addonics products are available through major catalog companies, resellers, VARs and distributors, including StorageUSA.com, Amazon.com, PC Connection, CDW, Buy.com, Insight, Ingram Micro, and Ma Lab.

Dvision Selects Vweb's MPEG-2 Encoder for USB-Based PC Video Conferencing

Vweb, a leader in MPEG compression and broadband video networking technologies, has announced that Dvision has selected Vweb's USB-based MPEG-2 Encoder for its PC video conferencing systems. Dvision has integrated Vweb's USB-based MPEG-2 encoder with a camera and a microphone into their H.323 solution. This enables PCs to become multimedia terminals for low-latency and DVD-quality video conferencing applications with ynchronization. The USB-based MPEG-2 encoder compresses audio and video into MPEG bitstreams and multiplexes them into program stream. The host PC then takes the program stream and transmits it from point-to-point or point-to-multipoint (multicast) using industry-standard IP networking protocols. Dvision integrates this technology with their multi-point control unit (MCU), Audio Bridge and H.323 protocols, to form a complete video conferencing system.
