Philips Unveils 4X DVD+R/+RW PC Drive at COMDEX

Philips announced its latest DVD+R/+RW data drive that offers a faster writing speed on DVD+R media. Its 4x write speed on DVD+R media will allow consumers to create 4.7 GByte DVDs containing home videos, photo albums and PC data in less than 15 minutes. compliant with Mount Rainier (a joint standards initiative supported by leading manufacturers worldwide). In addition, Philips' Seamless Link and Thermo Balance Writing technologies ensure the highest levels of reliability and quality during operation. Mass production of the Philips drive will start early in 2003 and will be made available to both PC OEM customers and in Philips branded kits for the aftermarket.

GEAR Debuts New GEAR.wrks SDK CD/DVD Recording Toolkit

Software developers can seamlessly integrate DVD and CD recording features in their products with the new release of GEAR.wrks Toolkit v3.4 for DVD and CD recording announced by GEAR Software. GEAR.wrks Toolkit is a Visual C++ dynamic link library enabling developers to embed full-featured control over all phases of  DVD and CD recording in their software products. GEAR.wrks Toolkit supports ISO/UDF, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, Audio CD, Super VideoCD, VideoCD, and other recordable formats. GEAR.wrks Toolkit v3.4 is a powerful, reliable developer library for integrating CD and DVD recording support in multimedia, digital imaging, data storage, and other software products. The new release contains several features, most notably fixed and variable packet writing, VideoCD, bootable image support, raw disc at once, and auto-sensing to configure CD and DVD recording hardware "on the fly." Because GEAR.wrks Toolkit supports virtually all CD and DVD recorders and  recordable media standards (DVD+/-R/RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R/RW), software companies can provide comprehensive optical recording support in their products without the associated development and support costs. The GEAR.wrks 3.4 Toolkit release introduces several new developments, including CD-Audio functions that enable "on-the-fly recording of audio (from memory)" and "on-the-fly audio extraction (direct to memory)." GEAR.wrks users can easily capture a stream from an MP3 decoder and write it directly to disc. Moreover, developers can rip audio content to RAM so that an MP3 encoder can compress it without first having to write the stream as a file to the hard drive. Another breakthrough in GEAR.wrks is VideoCD project support to create DVD-like CDs with multi-level video menus, and remote-control handling such as previous, next and default play, pause and time-outs. CD's created with GEAR.wrks Toolkit can play back on set-top DVD boxes.

TDK Introduces "Armor Plated" DVD Media, Claims Tougher Than the Rest

TDK has announced the introduction of its Armor Plated DVD discs, premium quality recordable DVD media that incorporate next-generation hard-coating technologies to achieve unprecedented durability. According to TDK, the new Armor Plated discs provide 100 times greater resistance than "standard" media to damage from everyday use such as scratches, dirt, fingerprints, and other contaminants. The Armor Plated coating is also anti-static, which repels dust accumulation. Because the TDK Armor Plated treatment protects the recording layer, it can prevent write/read errors, jitter, or even dropouts in recording and playback, TDK says. And TDK adds that its Armor Plated DVD discs carry only a small price premium compared to standard recordable DVD media. The full line of TDK Armor Plated DVD discs will be available in the first quarter of 2003 with an estimated street price TBA.
