Alera Introduces the DVD/CD Shredder Plus

Alera Technologies, developer and manufacturer of Advanced DVD and CD Recording Solutions, has announced that it is launching its new DVD/CD Shredder Plus; this media destruction device cuts DVDs, CDs, floppy disks, and credit cards into small unusable strips, permanently preventing unauthorized use and it is HIPAA compliant. With carbon steel blades and ½ horsepower motor, this industrial strength product is designed specifically for shredding DVDs, CDs, and floppy's. The DVD/CD Shredder Plus is equipped with a unique automatic start/stop feature and a 4 gallon receptacle to catch the pieces.

When information is stored on DVDs and CDs the amount of data and the danger of loss is enormous. A single CD holds the equivalent of approximately 80 four-drawer cabinets of text data. One side of a single DVD disc holds about 560 four-drawer cabinets filled with data, seven times CD capacity.

Even when information is not considered confidential, it can be damaging if it falls into the wrong hands. Most companies' trash contains a gold mine of information and taking items or information from someone's dumpster is entirely legal. Recording data and information of all types on DVD and CD discs is a growing practice and the problem of secure disposition of old discs is growing faster. When DVDs and CDs are used to store data or back up a system, usually all of the data on a subject is recorded. When changes are made, they are typically to only small parts of the data and when changes are stored, all of the data is re-recorded on a new DVD or CD. The DVD or CD made before the changes still contains much sensitive and valuable information.

The DVD/CD Shredder has an estimated street price of only $99.

ArcSoft Provides Innovative Solution For Networked DVD Players

ArcSoft, Inc., a leading developer and provider of multimedia software and firmware solutions for personal computer, mobile device, and consumer electronics manufacturers, has announced that its embedded technology solution for networked DVD players is now available.

ArcSoft's solution uses a consumer-friendly interface, similar to those found in set-top DVD players and PC applications, to give users the ability to view content over their home network without purchasing specialized hardware. Using a DVD player which has the ArcSoft solution, consumers can access the PC-based multimedia content and enjoy it throughout his or her house without having to purchase expensive proprietary, non-standard electronics or to struggle to connect multiple media devices or systems. ArcSoft's solution is designed to leverage the power of the PC to provide content to the DVD player in a format the DVD player can understand via a wired, wireless, or power line-based home network. This method effectively uses both the PC as a media content storage and management tool and the DVD player as a flexible, feature-rich, easy-to-use playback device.

The complementary MediaMirror software includes real-time transcoding and rendering of PC-based content into formats the DVD player is designed to accept. This will allow the user to watch home movies, view photo slide shows, listen to custom audio collections, or browse the Internet in the same way the user browses a standard DVD disc.

Faraday Introduces High-Resolution MPEG-4 Solution for Multimedia Applications

Faraday Technology Corporation announced the availability of its MPEG-4 codec IP, which achieves 4CIF (720 x 576) resolution at low bit rates for multimedia applications such as camcorders, digital video recorders (DVRs), DVD players, video conference equipments, surveillance products, set-top-boxes, and other media-intensive products.

The MPEG-4 engine includes a video and image compression/decompression IP core, a DMA controller, and a video capture functional block. In addition to this new MPEG-4 engine, Faraday's multimedia platform solution employs an ARM core or other microcontroller, an AMBA bus, and modularized hardware/software IPs, to provide greater flexibility of being integrated with other functional blocks.

Faraday's FTMCP100 is a video and image compression/decompression IP core supporting MPEG-4 (ISO/IEC 14496-2) simple profile L0 ~ L3 standard and JPEG (ISO/IEC 10918-1) base-line standard. Depending on the CPU firmware, it can support MPEG4 or JPEG encoding and decoding. The FTMCP100 supports up to 30 frames per second (fps) at 4CIF (720 x 576) resolution; it also supports other standard resolutions (sub QCIF, QCIF, CIF, and VGA) and non-standards on 16-pixel steps.

Faraday's MPEG-4 codec IP also features high resolution, minimum CPU load, a small gate count, small internal memory blocks, and low power consumption. At 4CIF, 30 fps mode, the MPEG4 encode frequency is 85MHz, and the CPU load is 36 MHz. The total gate count is just155K gates. The internal RAM is 10K Byte and External DRAM is 1215K Byte. When manufactured on UMC's 0.18um standard process, the power consumption is only 1.2 mW/MHz.
