Sony Announces Latest 3-CCD Megapixel MiniDV Handycam Camcorder

Sony has announced the DCR-HC1000, a three-CCD camcorder. Each CCD imager is dedicated to a primary color. They separate light passing through the lens into individual color components for sharper images and colors.

The new DCR-HC1000 model is expected to be available next month for about $1,700.

The camcorder's new grip swivels forward a full 90 degrees and includes a stop/start record button on the LCD frame. For the video hobbyist, there are optional manual controls, such as a 12X optical and 150X digital zoom, zoom ring, zebra pattern, spotlight compensation and spot focus. The new camcorder offers audio recording with PCM Digital Stereo Audio in 12 and 16-bit audio modes. It features Sony's SteadyShot optical image stabilization system to keep the image steady, plus it offers the dual functionality of capturing digital still images of up to 1152X864 resolution. JPEG images are stored directly onto Memory Stick PRO Duomedia cards for transfer to PCs and other devices.

Other features include:

  • 2.5" Precision SwivelScreen Hybrid LCD Display
  • InfoLithium Battery with AccuPower System
  • i.LINK Digital Video Interface

ExpoDisc Unveils New Color Balance Filter

ExpoDisc Inc. has announced the ExpoDisc Digital White Balance Filter.

The ExpoDisc Digital WB Filter is, in effect, a gray card in a lens cap. It lets you read and set white balance before shooting, thus eliminating the need for post-capture color adjustments. The ExpoDisc filter works with film, digital cameras and digital video, and is available in six standard sizes from 58mm to 82mm.

The snap-on disc is a neutral diffusion filter that gathers ambient light from 180 degrees and passively transmits 18% of it through to your camera's light meter. The resulting 'gray frame' represents the colorcast of the light in which the photograph is being taken. From this gray frame, you then can set a custom white balance with your digital camera's menu.

Each filter is manufactured and individually calibrated to fall within 1/12th f/stop accuracy for exposure. It comes with a card recording its exact density and color balance (+/- 3% of absolute neutral) as noted on the color analyzer for color balance.

List prices range from $79.95 to $159.95.

Canopus Announces ADVC110 Digital Video Converter for Windows and Mac

Canopus Corporation has announced ADVC110, a portable external bidirectional analog/digital video converter for Windows and Mac OS-based computers that features FireWire bus-powered operation and audio-only conversion capabilities. ADVC110 is a conversion solution that connects VHS, Hi8 and other analog video equipment to all DV cameras, decks and editing systems.

ADVC110 can be used for capture and output of S-Video and composite analog video from FireWire-equipped notebook or desktop computers. There are no software drivers to install and systems equipped with 6-pin FireWire ports are able to supply power through the FireWire cable, so ADVC110 does not require an external power supply. Systems and devices equipped with 4-pin FireWire ports will require an optional power supply. ADVC110 also can operate as a stand-alone converter without a computer.

ADVC110 features the Canopus DV hardware codec technology found in the full line of Canopus DV capture cards and Advanced Digital Video Converters. On the audio front, ADVC110 supports locked audio when converting from analog to digital video. ADVC110 also allows for conversion of analog audio signals alone.

In addition to supporting most DV and analog video equipment, ADVC110 is compatible with editing and DVD authoring applications such as Canopus EDIUS, Canopus Let's EDIT, Apple Final Cut Pro and iLife, Avid Xpress DV, Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, Ulead MediaStudio Pro, and Windows Movie Maker.

ADVC110 supports NTSC, PAL and SECAM standards and will be available July 22, 2004 from Canopus and its authorized resellers.
