Simple Star Announces the Release of PhotoShow Express

Star, Inc. has announced the release of PhotoShow Express, downloadable for free at the website.

PhotoShow Express allows users to organize and edit their photos, create and share musical shows with their digital photos and music, and print pictures. Users can also create and order a photo experience on DVD through Simple Star's integrated DVD service. Other features include image acquisition, editing, free online sharing, photo gift creation, and integration into online print services such as

PhotoShow Express is certified to be free of "adware" or "spyware" and is not limited to a trial period. Additionally PhotoShow Express offers a broad feature list and extends the imaging features integrated into the Microsoft XP operating system.

PhotoShow Express has a suggested MSRP of $29.99, but is available as a free download. If the end user desires more features, they can upgrade to PhotoShow Deluxe, available on the Web site for $49.99.

Turbolinux Bundles Commercial DVD Player for Linux

Turbolinux has recently launched its latest operating system dubbed Turbolinux 10F (10F). This system was released as the multimedia version of Turbolinux 10 Desktop (10D), and expands on software already integrated into the 10D operating system.

PowerDVD received Dolby Digital sound certification in early June 2004. It also includes a Content Scrambling System (CSS) decoder that supports copyright protection and circumvents data piracy.

The PowerDVD platform for Linux supports full menu navigation and encompasses a dual-subtitle feature, giving users the capacity to display two separate languages onscreen. Outside Japan, Turbolinux 10F is priced at $69.00 for the full version and $39.00 for users upgrading from 10D.

Building on the success of PowerDVD, CyberLink is shortly slated to release another Turbolinux 10F-compatible application entitled PowerCinema Linux. This application premiered at the Turbolinux booth at LinuxWorld Tokyo in June 2004. PowerCinema Linux offers a selection of digital media entertainment options utilizing a 3D user-interface with remote control function. Highlights include the ability to listen to and organize music tracks, playback video files and access online content previously available only to Windows users. The basic feature set is expandable with future plug-ins via the Web.

Sony's New Cyber-Shot DSC-P150

Sony's new Cyber-shot DSC-P150 is a compact point-and-shoot digital camera equipped with 7.2 megapixels. It will be available in September for less than $500.

The P150 camera yields an image size of 3072X2304--making it capable of capturing enough pixels to make 300dpi 8" x 10" enlargements.

The Cyber-shot P150 digital camera is one-inch thick, and features a Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar 3X optical zoom lens, an InfoLithium battery with up to 310 shots per charge, and a 1.8-inch LCD screen. With the optional Cyber-shot Marine Pack (MPK-PHB), the Cyber-shot P150 can be used underwater with water resistance to a depth of up to 132 feet.

The Cyber-shot P150 camera also includes a 32MB Memory Stick media card, and is compatible with Memory Stick PRO high-capacity media cards.

LaCie Big Disk Extreme Qualified for Use with Pinnacle Systems CinéWave

LaCie has announced that Pinnacle Systems has qualified the Big Disk Extreme and FireWire 800 PCI Card for use with Pinnacle's CinéWave RT and CinéWave RT Pro real-time editing systems.

Pinnacle Systems tested and approved the use of two striped 500GB LaCie Big Disk Extreme drives with CinéWave RT and CinéWave RT Pro. By connecting one unit to the Apple Power Mac's built-in FireWire port and the other to a LaCie FireWire 800 PCI Card, video professionals can edit uncompressed video and use real-time effects offered by CinéWave.

LaCie introduced the Big Disk Extreme in January 2004 at Macworld Expo San Francisco. Drives include all cables needed for use with the dual FireWire 800, FireWire 400, and iLink/DV ports—for professionals working with audio and video on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. Suggested retail prices for Big Disk Extremes are: 320GB/$369, 400GB/$449, 500GB/$549. LaCie FireWire 800 PCI Cards include three FireWire 800 ports and retail at $69. Both products are available through LaCie authorized resellers including the Apple Store.

Apple Introduces the New iPod

Apple has introduced the new iPod, the fourth generation of the portable digital music player, featuring Apple's patent-pending Click Wheel, which combines scrolling of a touch-sensitive wheel with five push buttons for one-handed navigation. The new iPod also features up to 12 hours of battery life and Shuffle Songs, a new command in the main menu. All iPods work with Apple's iTunes, providing music fans with a digital jukebox on either a Mac or Windows computer and access to the iTunes Music Store.

iPod features Apple's patent-pending Auto-Sync technology that downloads a digital music library onto the iPod and keeps it up-to-date whenever it is plugged into a Mac or Windows computer using FireWire or USB. Users can transfer two songs per second from their Mac or Windows computer and can now charge iPod with either the included FireWire or USB cable.

The new 20GB and 40GB iPods are available immediately for a suggested retail price of just $299 for the 20GB iPod and $399 for the 40GB iPod through the Apple Store, Apple's retail stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers. Both iPods include earbud headphones, 1.2m 30-pin to FireWire cable, a 1.2m 30-pin to USB cable, and a CD with iTunes 4.6 for Mac and Windows computers. The 40GB model also includes an iPod dock.

iPod requires a Mac with a FireWire port and Mac OS X version 10.1.5 or later (Mac OS X v10.2 or later recommended); or a Windows PC with a FireWire or USB port, or a Windows-certified FireWire or USB card and Windows 2000, XP Home, or XP Professional.

Zoran Announces HDXtreme Processor, Delivering High-Definition Video on DVD Players

Zoran Corporation announced that its HDXtreme DVD upscaler, with a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), enables the new generation of DVD players to digitally transfer high-quality video, audio, and digital photos to HDMI-equipped high-definition televisions.

As a companion to Zoran's seventh-generation Vaddis DVD solution, HDXtreme and Vaddis 7 enable consumers to view DVD video and digital photos at high-definition resolutions. The output can be digital via HDMI or analog via the 160MHz digital to analog converters. HDXtreme is offered in an 80-pin quad flat pack. HDXtreme (ZR36721) and Vaddis 7 samples and a complete reference design kit are available to qualified manufacturers.

Verbatim Rolls Out New Mini DVD-R and DVD-RW Discs

Verbatim Corporation had announced new 1-4X Mini DVD-R and 1-2X Mini DVD-RW Discs. The discs are only three inches in diameter but offer a capacity of up to 1.4GB and compliance with the DVD specifications.

In addition to supporting DVD camcorders from manufacturers such as Sony and others that use disc-based Mini DVD media, Verbatim Mini DVD write-once and rewritable media can also be used with standard DVD recorders and most DVD players that support the DVD-R/RW formats.

About half the size of standard 12cm DVDs, the Verbatim Mini DVD-R and Mini DVD-RW discs have the capacity to store 30 minutes of high-quality video or archive up to 1.4GB of data to a single disc.

Verbatim Mini DVD-R disc five-packs are available now at leading retailers, Internet resellers including, and distributors with a street price of $19.99. The three-pack Mini DVD-RW discs will begin shipping in August and are expected to have a street price of less than $29.99.

Wolfson Releases Multichannel CODEC for AV Systems

Wolfson Microelectronics has released the WM8777, the latest generation of its multi-channel CODEC family. When combined with a commercially available DSP, this single mixed-signal device provides most of the major audio functions for next generation of 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 Audio-Visual systems, including DVD receivers, flat-panel televisions and other multimedia home and automotive equipment.

The WM8777 CODEC integrates an eight-channel DAC, 2-Channel ADC, with a four-input Digital Interface Transceiver (S/PDIF), bass management, stereo mix-down, and tone and volume control for both 5.1 analog inputs and digital playback sources. The WM8777 also provides a secondary audio interface, which allows the S/PDIF interface to run independently of the CODEC audio interface.

Each of the eight DAC channels has a Master Volume Control, with a gain range of +20dB to -100dB in 1dB steps. The WM8777 provides 7.1 Channel support or 5.1 operation. Sampling rates range from 8KHz to 192KHz and the integrated stereo headphone amplifier includes source selection.

The WM8777 is available in a 100-pin TQFP package priced at $7.34 in quantities of 10,000.
