Intervideo Launches WinDVD Platinum

InterVideo, Inc. has launched WinDVD Platinum, the latest version of the world's most popular DVD-playing software, which includes a number of new features including DivX support, making WinDVD Platinum the ultimate way to watch DivX movies. The new software is also the first DVD player to include Dolby Virtual Speaker Technology, a brand new technology from Dolby that replicates rich, surround sound audio over only two speakers. Home theater surround systems normally use five speakers: three across the front and two surround speakers on the sides. Until now, users with less than 5 speakers could not enjoy full home theater surround sound, but Dolby Virtual Speaker technology changes all that. Dolby Virtual Speaker technology uses an advanced psychoacoustics algorithm to create over two speakers, or more, the same surround effect produced by a multichannel system. Audio channels are processed through advanced "filters" that simulates the sonic signature of a speaker located within an acoustic space. By re-creating these waveforms, as they would be heard from real speakers, it is possible to experience a very realistic sensation of 5 discrete sound sources over 2 speakers. In addition to Dolby Virtual Speaker functionality, WinDVD Platinum also includes several new features not found in any other version of WinDVD including: Movie Effector and advanced de-interlacing for higher quality video, docking capabilities, new skins and support for 96 khZ/24 bit audio - which produces high-resolution sound for audiophiles. WinDVD Platinum also includes the more than 30 new features and enhancements that were added to WinDVD 4 Plus, such as improved picture quality, easier-to-use Time-Stretching and Video Desktop - which lets users watch movies under their desktop icons while working and checking email.

Philips Introduces Nexperia Solution for the DVD+R/+RW Recorder Market

Philips' Nexperia reference design, complete with back-end and front-end integrated circuits (ICs), and optical pickup unit (OPU), will allow high-end consumer electronics (CE) manufacturers to rapidly develop advanced DVD+R/+RW recorders for the consumer audio/video (A/V) market at competitive price points. This latest offering completes Philips' DVD+R/+RW reference design portfolio, as highlighted by a number of recent Philips' announcements targeted at both the consumer A/V and personal computing (PC) data markets. Philips Nexperia DVD+R/+RW reference design is the first system solution offering CE manufacturers the technology, hardware and software necessary to quickly and cost-effectively introduce advanced DVD+R/+RW recorders into the consumer A/V market. The DVD+R/+RW reference design is based on a front-end solution built around the Nexperia pnx7850 processor and an OPU manufactured by Philips. The back-end solution is built upon the Nexperia pnx7100, a single-chip AVG (Audio, Video, Graphics) MPEG2 CODEC. The complete design presents a highly integrated solution that is optimized to meet the stringent cost, performance and recording requirements making it an ideal solution for the home living room environment. The newest Philips Nexperia video recorder system solution completes the company's overall DVD+R/+RW portfolio of semiconductor solutions. Earlier in the year, Philips introduced the pnx7100, an MPEG2 CODEC targeted for laser disk- and hard disk-based digital recording systems (May 20). Philips then recently announced a value turnkey reference design geared towards second-tier CE manufacturers featuring the pnx7100 as one of the key building blocks (October 22), as well as unveiled a front-end solution for high-performance PC DVD video recorders (November 4). Now Philips is providing a highly reliable DVD+R/+RW solution, combining both its front-end and back-end semiconductor expertise, for top-tier CE manufacturers. Samples of the Philips Nexperia DVD+R/+RW system solution, which includes the front-end chipset around the pnx7850 processor and Philips OPU, and a back-end chipset around the pnx7100 are available now. Volume production is scheduled for Q1 2003. Component pricing is $100.00 USD at volumes of 100,000 units.

MPEG-4 Audio Licensing Committee Selects Administrator; Finalizing Terms for Audio Profile Licensing

Members of the MPEG-4 Audio Licensing Committee have announced the selection of Via Licensing Corporation as the Licensing Administrator for the MPEG 4 Audio patent pool. This development will hasten the availability of standard licensing agreements for patents essential to MPEG-4 Audio technologies. MPEG Audio technologies are familiar to users around the world. MPEG-1 Layer 3, otherwise known as MP3, provides an excellent example of the value of an open and interoperable standard in the creation of new applications and markets. The most recent MPEG standard, MPEG-4, doesn't define a single audio coding scheme, but rather a rich set of technologies addressing a range of different applications and covering a spectrum of bit-rate, scalability, and audio quality requirements. The goal of the MPEG-4 Audio Licensing Committee is to provide one-stop access to patents from multiple parties that are necessary for the practice of MPEG-4 Audio under fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory conditions. The MPEG-4 Audio standard is organized so that various audio tools, or coding approaches, are assembled into Audio Objects that are further combined into multiple MPEG-4 Audio Profiles. The work of the MPEG-4 Audio Licensing Committee was initiated by the MPEG-4 Industry Forum (M4IF) with a request that patent holders develop licensing terms for three MPEG-4 Audio Profiles: the High Quality Audio Profile, the Speech Audio Profile, and the Mobile Audio Internetworking ("MAUI") Profile. In addition to these three profiles, members of the Licensing Committee are working with Via Licensing Corporation to create essential patent license agreements for those Audio Objects that are of interest to the market on a stand-alone basis. The specific technologies comprising the MPEG-4 Audio Profiles to be covered by the initial licenses are:

--  Speech Audio Profile--CELP, HVXC, TTSI

--  High Quality Audio Profile--AAC LC, AAC LTP, AAC Scalable,

CELP, ER AAC LC, ER AAC LTP, ER AAC Scalable, ER CELP

--  Mobile Audio Internetworking Profile--ER AAC LC, ER AAC

-- Scalable, ER TwinVQ, ER BSAC, ER AAC LD

The Licensing Committee expects to deliver MPEG-4 Audio Profile license agreements in the first quarter of 2003.

Envivio and Nagravision Partner to Demonstrate First MPEG-4 ISMA-Based Content Protection Solution

Envivio, Inc, a leading provider of end-to-end MPEG-4 broadcast and streaming solutions and Nagravision, the world's leading independent provider of conditional access and secure digital TV solutions, announced today the first-ever Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Conditional Access solution based on Internet Streaming Media Alliance (ISMA) draft specifications. This joint solution, which utilizes Nagravision's conditional access security technology and Envivio's MPEG-4 solution, allows content to be both produced and protected.  The ISMA specification provides a common standard for decrypting content, thereby allowing multiple security solution companies to provide solutions that can be decrypted in the same player.  Now content providers, network operators and telecom service providers worldwide can experience the benefits and interoperability inherent only in a standard, including the ability to choose from a variety of different codecs and security systems.  The encrypted files can then be streamed over any standard based MPEG-4 server.  As such, network operators can now be assured that their content is protected and infrastructure investment is "future-proofed."
