Primera Introduces Professional-Grade CD/DVD Publishing System

Primera has announced its new BravoPro, a CD/DVD publishing system designed for hands-free, automated production of up to 100 CDs or DVDs per job. An advanced robotic mechanism is used to transport discs into the built-in 52X CD recorders or optional Pioneer combo DVD±R/CD-R drives. After recording, discs are transported to the integrated printer and printed in full color at up to 4800dpi print resolution.

Increased robotic speed creates faster disc transport between the input/output bins, CD/DVD drives, and printer tray. Discs are also printed faster with Primera's exclusive Afterburner Print Technology (APT). APT uses a new print head technology from Lexmark that doubles the width of the print swath to increase print speed.

Two CD or DVD drives are integrated into every BravoPro Disc Publisher for maximum throughput. The BravoPro CD Publisher integrates high-speed Plextor 52X CD-R drives. The DVD model integrates Pioneer's new DVR-108 drives to record DVD±Rs at 16X and CD-Rs at 32X. Dual Layer DVD+Rs burn at 4X.

BravoPro prints CDs and DVDs direct-to-disc at up to 4800dpi print resolution. In addition, the print head has an ink droplet size of three picoliters, which Primera believes will help users achieve better graphics and photos along with the sharpest text quality.

BravoPro comes equipped with CD/DVD burning and printing software that is both Windows and Mac-compatible. For Windows, BravoPro uses PrimoDVD 2.1 duplication software by Sonic. The same burn engine used in PrimoDVD 2.1 is also utilized in the newest multimedia software from both Microsoft and Adobe. A professional labeling software program called SureThing CD Labeler Primera Edition is also included for graphic design or users can design disc graphics in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and CorelDRAW among others.

For Mac, BravoPro uses CharisMac Discribe 5.2 Mastering Software, which provides features utilized by video, audio, and graphics professionals for high-end disc mastering. Disc layout templates for Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop are also included with the Mac software.

Primera's AccuDisc Technology provides LED optics, instead of mechanical components, to eliminate misalignment of the picking mechanism, and prevent the feeding of double discs into the recordable drive.

BravoPro attaches to any PC running Windows 2000/XP through its built-in USB 2.0 interface.

Two BravoPro models are available: the BravoPro CD Publisher with two 52x CD-R recorders is priced at $3,495, and the BravoPro DVD Publisher with two 16X/32X Pioneer DVD±R/CD-R drives has an MSRP of $3995.

An adapter kit is available to copy and print 80mm round mini-discs, "hockey rink" mini-discs, and rectangular business card-shaped CDs. The Business Card Adapter Kit is priced at $229.

Primera's new PTBurn Network Software is also included with every unit. This software allows up to five users to send CD or DVD recording and print jobs to a BravoPro remotely from client PCs. The software runs on virtually any server/client network under Windows 2000/XP. Additional five-user license blocks are available for US$299.95 each.

BravoPro is available in more than 80 countries through Primera authorized resellers and distributors. Hundreds of retailers also sell Primera's products online.

Sony Unveils Its First Complete Professional HDV System

Sony is expanding its line of professional video options with the introduction of a new high-definition video production system. The HVR-Z1U camcorder and HVR-M10U VTR form the core of an entry-level HD acquisition and playback solution, designed to provide video professionals with a flexible and affordable migration from standard definition infrastructures to the rapidly expanding world of HD.

The HVR-Z1U HDV 1080 camcorder can record HDV, DVCAM, and DV images at 60i, 50i, 30, 25, or 24 frames per second, in either SD or HD. This switchable 60/50 capability allows videographers to use just one camcorder to meet an array of client needs.

The new camcorder uses three Super HAD, 1/3-inch, 16:9 native CCDs. Combined with a 12X Optical Zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* Lens and Sony's new 14 bit A/D with Digital Extended Processor (DXP), the HVR-Z1U's advanced design allows more light to reach each pixel in the imager, improving the signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity. In addition to high-quality image capabilities, the HVR-Z1U includes features and capabilities designed to make the camcorder a professional production tool. Key features include:

  • CineFrame and CinemaTone Gamma functions for "cinema like" recordings (25F/30F/24F)
  • Hyper Gain · Manual Iris Control with 24 steps
  • SMPTE timecode with user presets
  • Color Correction
  • Built-in HD to SD down conversion playback
  • Balanced Audio XLR input connectors (x2) w/Selectable Phantom Power
  • Simultaneous use of viewfinder and LCD display (selectable)

The HVR-M10U model is a lightweight, compact HDV 1080 VTR capable of recording and playback of HDV 1080, DVCAM, and DV SP, as well as playback of video recorded in 720/30P. In addition to allowing backward compatibility to the standard definition DV world, the 1080 recorded image can also be down-converted to SD output mode directly from the VTR or camcorder in the digital or analog domain.

Designed in conjunction with the new camcorder and VTR is Sony's recommended professional media for HDV applications, DigitalMaster videotape. These 63-minute cassettes use Sony's AME II Technology and its dual-active magnetic layers. The new AME II manufacturing process employs Hyper Evaticle IV magnetic grains, improved lubricants, and a refined Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) layer. Sony says the DigitalMaster exhibits greater packing density of magnetic grains, higher retentivity, higher output, and lower noise. The result is a more robust tape with fewer dropouts and errors.

A critical aspect of any professional video production is compatibility with an array of non-linear editing solutions. Sony's HDV production system can achieve interoperability with editing software from Adobe, Apple, Avid, Canopus, Pinnacle, Ulead, and Sobey, as well as Sony's own Vegas 5 software, which can handle 1080 HDV signals, Sony says. The HVR-Z1U and the HVR-M10U are planned to be available in February, for about $4,900 and $3,700, respectively.

The PX-716SA has an 8MB buffer and features buffer underrun prevention technology to prevent buffer underrun errors and allow multi-tasking. Lossless Linking/Zero Link technology enables users to perform basic editing tasks directly on the DVD disc.

The PX-716SA includes PlexTools Professional software, a unique combination of user-controllable CD recording and CD/DVD media test features. The PX-716SA also features Intelligent Recording, a combination of technologies designed to achieve recordings across a broad spectrum of media with varying grades of quality.

Plextor's bundled software package is supposed to offer ease-of-use and extensive functionality for Windows platforms. The PlexWriter PX-716SA ships with Easy Media Creator 7, Basic DVD Edition. Roxio's DVD/CD recording software lets users create movie DVDs, data DVDs, music CDs, photo slideshows synchronized with music, data CDs, and backup copies of personal discs. The software package also includes Roxio PhotoSuite 5 SE for capturing, organizing, editing, and sharing digital photos.

The Plextor PX-716SA DVD+/-R/RW drive is scheduled for shipment to distributors and resellers in North and South America in December. The internal PX-716SA drive has an MSRP of $159. All retail packages include unlimited toll-free technical support and one-year full warranty.
