Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator Technology Brings Multichannel Sound Authoring to Pinnacle Video Editing Software

Dolby Laboratories announced its Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator multichannel encoding technology is being licensed by Pinnacle Systems, Inc. and embedded within Pinnacle's latest desktop digital video editing software products. Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator is a standard feature in Pinnacle's Liquid Edition line of products and is also available as an option for Studio Plus, Pinnacle's consumer video editing and disc authoring application. The technology makes it possible for everyone from home enthusiasts to high-end users to create DVD-video soundtracks in surround sound from a PC.

Pinnacle digital video solutions featuring Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator offer 5.1-channel Dolby Digital encoding. Dolby Digital surround sound is a fitting complement to wide-screen video and special effects, which can now be created with Pinnacle video editing software.

Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator is also able to store more audio content on discs to optimize video compositions. With Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator, a 5.1 audio track can be recorded in a fraction of the space required by stereo PCM, according to Dolby Digital representatives. The resulting savings in disc space allow for a higher video bit rate or extended recording time.

Pinnacle Liquid Edition version 6 offers multiformat real-time editing, compositing and effects, DVD authoring tools, and a redesigned Microsoft Windows-based interface. Pinnacle Liquid Edition gives users the ability to edit multiple streams of content with real-time effects on a standard PC. Liquid Edition is currently available for a suggested retail price of $499.

Pinnacle Studio Plus is an enhanced version of Pinnacle Studio, including creative tools such as a second video track for true A/B-style editing, picture-in-picture and chroma key effects, slide show capabilities, and dual-layer DVD support to create DVDs that store up to two hours of high-quality video. Consumers may purchase Studio Plus as a standalone software product with Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, a two-channel encoder, for a suggested retail price of $99. It is currently available at all major retailers. Studio Plus users may upgrade online to Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator for $9 and also receive the added benefits of MP3 and MPEG-4 encoding directly from within the Studio application.

DVDs created using Pinnacle video editing software products with Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator technology play back in all DVD-Video players (assumes player compatibility with recordable DVD media), and the 5.1-channel audio featured on these discs is fully compatible with approximately 60 million Dolby Digital 5.1 enabled products sold worldwide.

Nero Digital Supported DVD Player Now Available

Ahead Software, in collaboration with Siemssen & Co. GmbH, announced the launch of a new DVD player that supports video files in the Nero Digital format for use in home movies. Nero Digital, co-developed by Ahead and Ateme, is one MPEG-4 audio and video solution for home entertainment and CE devices. Siemssen and Ahead have jointly developed a hardware product that can now display video files coded in Nero Digital (MPEG-4) straight onto your TV screen in the same high quality you've come to expect.

The "SCO 5000ND" DVD player is now available at www.siemssen-resale.de for EUR 99.00.

All you need to do to experience Nero Digital file formats "Live" on TV is to follow these three steps: First, install the Nero Recode CE DVD transcoding software that comes with the package on your PC, then convert the existing video files into Nero Digital format, and finally burn them onto a CD or DVD. They are now ready to play back on the newly developed DVD player. The encoding process simultaneously reduces the films to a fraction of their original file size, with almost no apparent loss in quality.

In addition to current standard functions and video file support, such as MP3, JPEG, VCD and SVCD, the "SCO 5000ND" DVD player manufactured by Siemssen also supports the playback of DVD audio files. The integration of Nero Digital offers support for various audio languages and subtitles. The latter can be retrieved using the same navigation buttons as those used to play back a standard DVD. In addition, the device is equipped with an AC3 Decoder as well as a YUV Output to enable full-screen reproduction (Progressive Scan) via video projectors, and plasma or LCD screens. The attractively designed slim-line casing also offers other features, such as a 5-in-1 card reader for all standard memory cards that allows MP3 files or even photo files to be visualized straight onto your TV screen. The product also supports DivX and Xvid playback functions, as well as the Nero Digital function.

NexFlash Unveils Serial Flash Memory with Boot-Block Features

NexFlash Technologies, Inc. announced the newest member of the NexFlash spiFlash line of its Serial Flash memories with the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). The new spiFlash NX25B40, a four-megabit (4Mb) device features dedicated boot and parameter sectors that can simplify code updates in computer and consumer-oriented applications, including DVD and CD-ROM drives. NexFlash also announced that it is now ramping volume production of the NX25B40.

NexFlash claims the NX25B40's architecture provides memory segmentation similar to boot-block Parallel Flash devices, resulting in a more convenient and efficient use of Serial Flash memory for boot code and data storage. The NX25B40 also enhances code security by allowing boot code to be write-protected while other areas of memory are being updated.

The NX25B40 is pin-and instruction-compatible with NexFlash's standard NX25P40 4Mb Serial Flash memory, allowing manufacturers to take advantage of the NX25B40 features. Unlike other Serial Flash devices with uniform 64-kilobyte (64KB) erasable-sectors, the NX25B40 has variable sector sizes, including two 4KB, one 8KB, one 16KB, one 32KB, and seven 64KB sectors. The small sectors are located at the bottom of the memory "bottom-boot" (standard) or optionally at the top of memory "top-boot" (special order). The organization stores an application's fundamental boot code, which must be maintained while the rest of the Flash memory is being updated. Typically the boot code uses far less than 64KB, making the NX25B40 more memory efficient than other Serial Flash devices.

The NX25B40 provides software and hardware protection of the small sectors so that boot code can be secure from accidental erasing or programming. This is not possible with ordinary Serial Flash, as it protects only larger memory areas such as one-eighth and one-quarter segments, and typically only from the top down. The small sectors are also useful for parameter and configuration data that frequently changes, since the smaller sectors erase and program faster than larger 64KB sectors, according to NexFlash. The NX25B40 clock also supports transfer rates of up to approximately 40MHz for fast-read and 33MHz for standard-read operation. The NX25B40 supports power-supply levels from 2.7V to 3.6V and operating temperature from minus-45 to plus-85 degrees centigrade.

The NX25B40 is housed in an 8-pin, 150-mil SOIC that is offered in standard and "green" (lead-free, RoHS compliant) packaging. The NX25B40 is immediately available and priced at $0.85 in 10,000-unit quantities.
