Verbatim Announces Shipping of Sample 8X DL Media, Final Testing of 8X DVD+RW Media

With the confirmation of the technical feasibility of the 8x-speed DVD+R Double Layer (DL) format, Verbatim Corporation announced that it will ship sample media to burner/recorder manufacturers to assist them in developing and optimizing the performance of their devices and for read/write and compatibility testing. Engineering samples of the new 8.5GB double layer media will also be used by software developers to upgrade and enhance their writing software. Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL media is expected to be available for consumers in Q3 2005.

The development of 8x-speed DVD+R DL media represents a significant performance leap. At 8x speed, the industry's fastest DVD DL burning speed, an entire 8.5GB disc can be filled to capacity in less than 16 minutes*-66 percent faster than first-generation 2.4x DVD+R DL media.

Verbatim also announced that it expects to begin shipping its new 8x DVD+RW media to retailers in Q1 2005. DVD burner manufacturers and their software suppliers have started using the media for drive design, read/write and compatibility testing. With the new Verbatim 8x DVD+RW media, users will be able to write or rewrite an entire 4.7GB disc in about 7 minutes. Backed by a limited lifetime warranty, Verbatim 8x DVD+RW media will be available through leading retailers, Internet resellers and distributors across the country late in Q1 2005.

Imation Introduces "Memory Protection" Layer for CDs and DVDs

Imation Corp's new proprietary ForceField scratch-resistant coating for Imation CDs and DVDs provides a long-lasting "memory protection" layer designed to resist the rigors of everyday life: scratches, dust, smudges and everyday wear and tear that can render a disc unplayable when not cared for or stored properly. But Imation's CDs and DVDs with ForceField protection have a revolutionaryscratch resistantcoating that provides the following benefits over standard uncoated discs:

Scratch and Scuff-Resistance means discs can withstand the rigors of everyday handling at home or the office, including skids across a tabletop or being cleaned with ordinary tissues or fabrics.

Anti-Static Dust-Resistance repels up to 100 times more dust than a standard uncoated disc, helping prevent playback skips caused by dust and debris. This eliminates the need for extra care when storing or carrying discs, or spending time searching for lint-free cleaning cloths.

Smear-Resistance allows fingerprints and surface smudges to be contained and easily wiped away - like the effects of car wax causing liquids to bead up rather than bleed and smear - reducing interference with disc recording and playback. Use any soft tissue, cloth or even a shirt sleeve to wipe the debris away.

Sonic Announces Announces Blu-ray and HD-DVD Support

Sonic Solutions announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that it will support the forthcoming Blu-ray data recording standard in its line of Sonic- and Roxio-branded consumer applications, as well as in its AuthorScript Software Development Kit for CD and DVD creation.

Working closely with the leading drive manufacturers implementing the Blu-ray format, Sonic is leveraging its advanced DVD recording technology, deployed on hundreds of millions of PCs worldwide, to deliver the industry's first, next generation BD- RE and BD-R data recording applications when the first drives ship in the summer of 2005. As the Blu-ray Disc video formats are finalized, Sonic will release a complete line of professional and consumer Blu-ray Disc applications for creation and playback of high- definition interactive content.

Sonic also announced that it is partnering with Panasonic to develop authoring systems for Blu-ray Disc (BD)-ROM for professional use. Under the agreement, the two companies will contribute technology and engineering toward the development of BD authoring systems. By combining Panasonic's BD technology with Sonic's expertise in creating highly interactive professional authoring environments, worldwide distribution channel, and vast installed user-base, the companies expect to establish the infrastructure required for professionals to gain access to the authoring technology in order to jump-start BD-ROM title creation.

Finally, Sonic announced that it will deliver systems for professional HD DVD production in the summer of 2005; this will enable the studios to have movies and video content available with the expected release of HD DVD players in late 2005. The next generation format from the DVD Forum, HD DVD combines high- definition video and audio content with advanced interactivity and internet connectivity. In addition to providing professional HD DVD authoring systems, Sonic plans to add HD DVD support to its Sonic- and Roxio-branded desktop and consumer software applications as HD DVD-ROM readers and HD DVD burners become available.
