Laird Introduces capdiv Direct DV Recorder

Laird Telemedia has announced the launch of its new, miniature capdiv Direct DV Recorder, a highly portable digital IEEE-1394 (FireWire) tapeless recorder/player based on Laird's proprietary hard-drive record and playback technology. Designed for videography, ENG, EFP, and field acquisition, the capdiv Direct DV Recorder greatly reduces the time and cost of recording edit-ready clips directly to a hard-disk drive (HDD) from DV camcorders during field shooting. The capdiv Direct DV Recorder's preformatted internal hard-disk drive enables the system to operate as a VTR -- complete with front-panel controls for record, play, and pause -- or to function as an HDD. When serving as a VTR, the capdiv can accept "start" and "stop" record commands automatically from the camera trigger/record button of any DV camcorder. capdiv relies on a proprietary file scheme incorporating 99 sequentially numbered capdiv files (CF). During shooting, video is recorded as raw DV content into a pre-selected CF, to which a virtually unlimited number of clips can be appended. The operator uses a front-panel pushbutton to insert cue marks while shooting, and as a result, marked material may be searched quickly and accessed without delay. When switched into HDD mode, the new DV recorder performs an almost instant conversion of raw DV content into an extended AVI format that can be imported into most NLE systems. NLEs configured with Final Cut Pro or Avid Xpress DV will recognize the capdiv Direct DV Recorder as an external hard drive. As a result, the video content is available instantly and ready for editing right away. Operators also may use the system for archiving purposes, recording to both tape and HDD simultaneously. The capdiv Direct DV Recorder is powered by any 12-V DC power source, including battery belts, NiCad packs, and 12-V wall packs. A belt clip mounted on the capdiv housing -- which measures just 1.75 in. by 4.0 in. by 4.75 in. -- offers easy slip on utility. The system weighs only 13 ounces. The capdiv is a full turnkey DV capture system, requiring no additional purchase. capdiv is supplied with a six-hour rechargeable beltpack battery, NP-1 adapter, AC power supply, and battery charger.
