RE:Vision Effects, Inc. releases ReelSmart Motion Blur Pro version 3.0

RE:Vision Effects releases ReelSmart Motion Blur Pro version 3.0, a full-step upgrade to the Digital Fusion plug-in set. ReelSmart Motion Blur (RSMB) automatically tracks every pixel in a sequence and blurs based on calculated motion.

RSMB Pro for Digital Fusion supports 8 and 16 bits-per-channel processing and takes advantage of multiprocessor machines. RSMB Pro supports foreground and background separation using a specified mask. RSMB Pro then uses proprietary filling and tracking techniques when working on the background layer, even when it is obscured by the foreground.

New features and compatibility of RSMB Pro 3.0 include the following:
• Motion blur can be applied using motion vectors from an external source, e.g., motion vectors from a 3D system.
• Requires Digital Fusion 4.04e or later, 16 bpc processing and the Digital Fusion After Effects adapter.

ReelSmart Motion Blur Pro 3.0 full license is priced at $189.95. A full license for a machine will run in both interactive and render-only versions of Digital Fusion. Upgrades from pre-v3.0 RSMB Pro Digital plug-in full licenses to version 3.0 are $55. • Render-only licenses are priced at $44.99. Render-only upgrades from version 2 are free (in fact, RSMB 2.0 render-only keys will install the RSMB 3.0 render-only version). Render-only licenses will only render Digital Fusion projects written on a machine by a valid fully licensed version of RSMB. Even though render license upgrades from version 2 are free, note that the render-only licenses will only render projects using the vector-input plugin if the project was saved on a machine with a valid full RSMB version 3 license.

DVD6C Announces Changes to DVD Licensing Progra

The DVD6C Licensing Group (DVD6C), the industry body representing seven leading developers of DVD technology and formats--Hitachi, Ltd., IBM Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic), Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Toshiba Corporation, Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) and Warner Home Video Inc. --has announced that it will revise its worldwide patent licensing program to offer licensees more licensing options and reduced royalty rates on certain products.

Under the revised licensing program, DVD6C licensees have the option of selecting portfolio licenses for particular categories of products, including DVD-Video Players, DVD recorders, DVD-ROM drives, DVD-Video discs, and DVD-Recordable discs. In addition, if a licensee enters into the new category license, minimum royalties for DVD-Video players, DVD-Audio players, and DVD-ROM drives will be reduced from US$4 to US$3; royalties for DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, and DVD-Audio discs will be reduced from US¢5 to US¢4.5; and minimum royalties for DVD-R, -RW and -RAM Discs will be reduced from US¢7.5 to US¢6.5.

DVD6C has licensed DVD patents owned by its member companies since June 1999 (adding licensing for DVD recorders; DVD-Audio players; DVD-R, -RW and -RAM drives; DVD-Audio, -R, -RW, -and -RAM discs and cases in September 2003). DVD6C's licenses cover patents owned by the 6C member companies that are essential for products that comply with the DVD format specifications defined by the DVD Forum.

The new royalty rates for the 14 categories are shown below. Reduced royalties for licensees who sign the revised license agreement by June 30, 2005 will be effective retroactive to January 1, 2005. Royalties for licensees who sign the revised license agreement after July 1, 2005 will be effective as of the signature date.
