Verbatim Delivers Latest 52X CD-R Recordable Media

Verbatim Corporation has announced DataLifePlus 52X-certified CD-R discs, the fastest recording speed for the CD-R format. In addition to supporting the 7.8 MB/sec write speeds of new 52X drives, Verbatim CD-R media can also be used with existing CD drives at speeds ranging from 1X to 48X. At 52X, the discs can record 80 minutes of music, 700MB of data, or 30 minutes of video in two minutes or less on 52X-capable recorders. Certification by the leading 52x drive manufacturers provides end users with the assurance that Verbatim 52X media offers optimum recording at the full rated speed and that Verbatim's Super Azo(TM) recording dye technology not only withstands the high-speed lasers and drive speeds of the new drives, it maximizes their performance. Media stability is further enhanced during manufacturing by using ultra-precise molding techniques developed by Verbatim to keep the discs flat. For improved reflectivity and maximum read/write performance, the new media's CD-R silver reflective layer is safeguarded with a dual-protective layer that provides a longer archival life and protection from scratches that can damage the recording layer. Verbatim's DataLifePlus CD-R media is the only CD-R disc that includes double protection for the reflective layer as standard. As with all DataLifePlus CD-R media, Verbatim says the 52X CD-R discs deliver an estimated archival life of more than 100 years. Verbatim DataLifePlus 52x 80-min./700MB CD-R media will be available in January from authorized resellers in single and multiple-disc packages with ultra-slim cases, and spindles.

Major Hollywood Studios File Motion for Partial Summary Judgment Against 321 Studios; Hollywood Studios Seek to Stifle DVD Copying Software

Seven major Hollywood studios filed a motion for a partial summary judgment in a suit brought by 321 Studios, which seeks the right to continue selling its DVD copying software. U.S. Judge Susan Illston, of the Northern District of California, will hear the partial summary judgment motion on April 25th. In their motion for partial summary judgment, the defendants are requesting a ruling that 321 Studios' products are illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and should be enjoined. 321 Studios first filed a complaint on April 22, 2002, in the Northern District of California, seeking a declaratory judgment, that by distributing the DVD Copy Plus software, the company is not in violation of the DMCA, because the use of such software constitutes a "fair use," and that the DMCA provisions, if construed to cover 321 Studios' products, violate the First Amendment. No damages are sought in the suit. The defendants, which include Metro Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, TriStar Pictures, Columbia Pictures Industry, Time Warner Entertainment, Disney Enterprises, Universal City Studios and Saul Zaentz Company, filed a counter claim, on December 19th, 2002, charging that 321 Studios' products violate the DMCA. In the counterclaim, the studios seek to enjoin the sale of 321 Studio's products, DVD Copy Plus and DVD X Copy.

Media 100 Announces Version 2 844/X Finishing Release

Media 100 Inc., a leading provider of advanced media systems, has announced The Finishing Release, the version 2 software release for Media 100's 844/X tunkey video editing system. The Finishing Release expands 844/X on many fronts with new toolsets for color correction, unlimited-layer compositing, editing, and audio.  The Company plans to feature The Finishing Release in April at NAB 2003 and begin first
customer shipments in May 2003. The Finishing Release features a newly engineered color correction toolset that delivers high precision and real-time speed enabling users to view and interactively adjust and match the color values of clips instantly and accurately. The precision and throughput are breakthroughs enabled by the GenesisEngine that powers 844/X and whose onboard Foss, Holmes, and Hatalsky custom silicon processors incorporate color correction algorithms that execute in real time. GenesisEngine color correction employs 10-bit quantization throughout and computational precision up to 31 bits while processing in real time up to four uncompressed video streams simultaneously. The Finishing Release improves the content designer's ability to create static and animated mattes, and features a new spline tool that lets users rotoscope and create sophisticated spline-based mattes. Other new matte design support includes viewing individually the foreground layer, the background layer, the matte layer, or the result; viewing the foreground, background or result layer overlaid with a transparent "ruby" matte to precisely position or shape the matte and add or adjust splines or matte shape; a new circular gradient tool; specifying if the matte is enabled for an entire clip, from the current frame to the end of the clip, or just for the current frame, enabling the user to create unique effects such as creating write-on mattes; saving and re-editing mattes. The Finishing Release also increases the power of the 844/X Keyframe Curve Editor. This interface is the editing and compositing heart of 844/X that gives editing users much more power to edit, design effects, and composite layers than conventional dual-stream systems. With new curve segment dragging, the user can now grab and position
segments of a curve directly without having to select individual keyframes.
A new automatic drag-to-add-keyframe capability allows the user to easily
and instantly insert keyframes wherever the user modifies a curve.  These
additions simplify and increase the power of the compositing workflow. Other new features include added motion effects, a new parameter editor, 3:2 pulldown, expanded audio capabilities, and enhanced media management.
