Nero CD-DVD Speed 4 Now Available

Nero has announced the release of Nero CD-DVD Speed 4. Graphically and structurally enhanced, the user interface of this standard benchmarking tool for CD, DVD and Blu-ray drives now allows all key functions, such as Benchmark, DiscInfo, DiscQuality, and ScanDisc, to be directly accessed and managed through tabs in the main window.

Thanks to more specific error messages, test results permit greater differentiation. For example, ScanDisc now also detects C1/C2 and PI/PO errors and organizes the results by track (audio CD), chapter (video DVD) or file (data disk), making it significantly easier to locate defective data. Disc content data available under DiscInfo was also expanded to include information on physical formats and the number of layers or sessions. With a click of the mouse, the results can be copied to the clipboard as a text or as HTML.

The new version has also been enhanced in terms of its graphic presentation. Color coding makes it easier to read the results, graphs can be customized, and the program window can be resized, including full-screen mode. CD-DVD Speed comes with the Nero Toolkit, which consists of several programs for quick and easy access to comprehensive information on the system, the CD and DVD drives, and their optimal operating settings.

CD-DVD Speed conducts simple or more in-depth drive and medium tests for various formats--including the recent standard, Blu-ray. It can also generate special test media. Results are graphically displayed and can be exported and imported to and from many different programs. CD-DVD Speed 4 can be downloaded at www.nero.com.

Nero Toolkit, which includes Nero CD-DVD Speed, is part of Download Package 1. For more information, visit www.nero.com.

New JVC Camcorders Feature Large Capacity, Built-In Hard Disk Drives

JVC has announced a new series of camcorders that eliminates the need to carry tapes, discs, or any media at all, yet can record up to seven hours of DVD movie-quality video. They also record more than 10.5 hours at a quality level comparable to a DVD camcorder's 30-minute mode.

The new JVC Everio G Series camcorders record to a built-in hard disk drive and will be available in 20 and 30 gigabyte (GB) versions, offering unprecedented camcorder storage capacity. JVC's initial Everio G offering consists of four models. The GZ-MG20 with 20GB hard disk and the GZ-MG30 with 30GB hard disk provide seven and 10.5 hours respectively of DVD camcorder-quality (30-minute mode) video.

Step-up versions with a 1.33 Megapixel CCD are the seven-hour 20GB hard disk GZ-MG40 and 10.5-hour 30GB hard disk GZ-MG50. To put the storage capacity in context, it would take 22 DVD camcorder discs (8 cm/1.4GB discs) to hold seven hours of video. Despite the high capacity storage, Everio G camcorders are  palm-sized and weigh less than 14 oz. with the battery attached.

Their design is similar to a MiniDV camcorders, and include a 2.5-inch flip-out LCD monitor. Both cameras feature multiple connections allowing TV playback, dubbing to a VCR or DVD recorder, transfer to a PC or Apple Macintosh for DVD creation, editing, or posting to the Internet, or even burned directly without a PC to a full length movie DVD disc using an optional DVD burner.

The Everio G series GZ-MG50 and GZ-MG30 offer more than seven hours of storage at 9Mbps, which is close to the maximum bitrate for DVD movie quality recording, or 10.5 hours at 6Mbps, comparable to DVD Cam recordings. Two more modes are available for even more recording time. The entry level GZ-MG40 and GZ-MG20 offer an impressive 4.5 hours of storage at 9Mbps, and more than seven hours at 6Mbps.

Everio G Series models will be available in August at the following approximate prices: GZ-MG20, $800; GZ-MG30, $900; GZ-MG40, $900; GZ-MG50, $1,000.

InterVideo Launches WinDVD 7 With "Unprecedented" List of New High Definition and DVD Video/Audio Technologies

InterVideo, Inc. has announced WinDVD 7, the latest release of the software DVD player. Equipped with a brand new look and feel, WinDVD 7 is available in two versions. WinDVD 7 Gold is designed for movie lovers and business travelers who want an easy way to enjoy high-quality movie playback. For power users who want the latest audio/video technologies and the ability to tweak the controls for their personal preferences, InterVideo offers WinDVD 7 Platinum. With WinDVD 7 Platinum, InterVideo adds HDTV and Advanced Video Codec (AVC) specification support, also known as H.264 playback support. WinDVD 7 offers digital TV recorded content playback and supports channel navigation for HDTV transport stream recordings.

In addition, the latest DVD playback software adopts H.264, the next-generation DVD standard, MPEG-4 Part 10, making the state of the art video more accessible to more viewers. A universal player, the Platinum version can also be used to playback Real, QuickTime, WMV-HD (Windows Media Video High Definition) and MPEG-4 video files as well as InterActual-enhanced DVDs. In addition, the new WinDVD 7 will support the upcoming DivX multimedia technology to deliver high-quality interactive video files. Equipped for UPnP playback, WinDVD 7 can be used to play back content and easily allocate media files from other UPnP-licensed devices among CE devices and PCs within a UPnP Home Network.

Customizable controls, and the other dynamic player controls that have been added to WinDVD 7, help users maximize their entertainment experience. In addition to being able to adjust the sound balance of their speakers, they can choose from various viewing options including dock/un-dock, change placements of each sub-panel, or keep the WinDVD 7 viewing window on top of any other window. Also new with WinDVD 7 is the External Subtitle Control which not only checks for subtitles and loads them in the external subtitle file, it lets users adjust the placement, subtitle color and size. This is especially convenient for the new DivX media format for CE devices. Similar to the controls on a standard television set, there are no confusing settings with WinDVD 7.

WinDVD 7 also has a new Google Toolbar and Google Desktop Search application which provides fast, convenient access to obtaining information and managing multimedia files--not only through the Internet, but also on the desktop. With WinDVD 7, even the existing fun-to-use tools have been enhanced with new features. The new QuickClip 2, for capturing a video scene and saving it in a GIF format, now allows users to set the recorded length, image size, and customized frame encoding so files can be easily emailed to friends or even transferred to a mobile phone. The second-generation of Trimension DNM (Digital Natural Motion) technology featured in WinDVD 7 has also been enhanced. Widely recognized for delivering the smoothest motion playback, the technology now provides improved performance -- even in low power situations. With the WinDVD 7 Platinum version, users will have the opportunity to use the advanced viewing options to compare the improvement of using Trimension technology.

Like the previous version, WinDVD 7 features InterVideo's time-stretching and Mobile Technology. The Mobile Technology helps users extend the battery life and playback time of mobile PCs based on Intel Centrino processors. Time-stretching allows users to watch a 2-hour movie on a 1-hour and 30-minute flight by speeding up the playback without loss of audio or video quality.

WinDVD 7 can be used with desktop and laptop computers running Windows 98SE/2000/ME/XP. WinDVD 7 Gold, the standard consumer edition, and WinDVD 7 Platinum, InterVideo's high-end version, will be available at InterVideo's web site at www.intervideo.com on June 15 and will be at retail outlets around the world within the next few weeks. The suggested list prices are $49.95 for WinDVD 7 Gold and $69.95 WinDVD 7 Platinum. Upgrades for current licensed WinDVD users will also be available on the InterVideo web site.

Action Duplication Triples Capacity for DVD Manufacturing

Action Duplication, Inc., a manufacturer of DVD, CD, and VHS cassettes with plants in the Philadelphia and Baltimore areas, has announced the addition of new high speed M2 DVD molding line to increase the facility's output to 36,000 DVD-5 or DVD-9 discs per day. The equipment and plant upgrade cost $1.5 million.

The added capacity came in handy when the U.S. Department of Labor needed to replicate Up From Zero, a commemorative DVD honoring the rescue workers who excavated and rebuilt Ground Zero after the 9/11 disaster. Up From Zero was distributed via the Department of Labor Web site--and as word about the availability of the free title spread over the Internet, orders for the DVD far exceeded initial expectations. More than 200,000 copies of the title were replicated in a series of orders and re-orders before the program was ended.

Action Duplication has a facility in Ijamsville, MD, which serves the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. Their primary manufacturing plant is in Conshohocken, PA, just outside of Philadelphia. For more information on Action Duplication, please visit www.actionduplication.com or contact them at 610-828-7580.
