Verbatim Unveils New LightScribe 16X DVD-R Media

Verbatim Corporation has announced its new LightScribe 16x DVD-R media in 30-pack spindles. Verbatim, which already offers LightScribe CD-R and DVD+R media in 10-pack spindles, 20-pack slim cases and 30-pack spindles, will begin shipping the new LightScribe 4.7GB/120-minute DVD-R media in Q1 2006.

The company also is preparing to roll out LightScribe gold-background CDs and DVDs with a new coating that enables faster label printing, as well as color-background LightScribe CDs/DVDs in Q2. Engineering samples of the new LightScribe media are being showcased this week during CES in Las Vegas at Verbatim's Booth #36049, South Hall 4.

When Verbatim LightScribe media is combined with the LightScribe-enabled drives and software licensed by Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), consumers can use the same optical disc drive laser to burn content to the data side of the disc and create a silkscreen-quality label on the other side of the disc.

The LightScribe media coating was developed by Verbatim's parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd., (MKM) in collaboration with HP. As key backers of LightScribe technology, Verbatim and MKM are leveraging their expertise in optical technology to deliver the new LightScribe 16x DVD-R media, even faster label printing and more color choices.

Current LightScribe drive owners will be able to take advantage of the new media by updating their LightScribe system software. In addition to the current gold color, the new coating technology used on Verbatim's next-generation LightScribe CD and DVD media will enable the discs to be produced with vibrant new jewel-toned background colors such as yellow, green, and orange.

With its all-in-one approach to burning and labeling CDs and DVDs, LightScribe technology is being used by a growing number of home, office and mobile users. Now they can print professional-looking labels on the CD or DVD discs they create wherever they go -- without the need for a printer, ink cartridges or adhesive paper labels.

According to HP, 2.5 million LightScribe-enabled drives were shipped in the first six months following the January 2005 launch. NPD reports that LightScribe-enabled drives represented a record 18.8 percent of the US retail market sales for aftermarket PC DVD burners in October 2005. Consumers will be able to identify Verbatim LightScribe media through the LightScribe logo found on the packaging and in the hub of every disc.

Verbatim LightScribe 16x DVD-R discs and higher-speed media will be available in Q1 2006 with an estimated street price of $39.99 for a 30-pack spindle.

Memorex Introduces Fastest Recordable Double/Dual Layer DVD Media

Memorex has added to its optical media line-up with its highest performing Double and Dual Layer (DL) DVD media. Memorex 8X DVD+R Double Layer and 4X DVD-R Dual Layer discs deliver the industry's fastest recording speeds and up to 8.5 GB of recording capacity.

Memorex DL media can record movies or other content, featuring 80 percent more capacity than a standard DVD. Longer continuous recording makes Memorex DL media ideal for recording movies, music and sporting events. DL discs offer DVD-quality picture resolution with four hours of recording time -- about two hours more than a single layer DVD -- accommodating most standard length movies on one disc. In addition to entertainment fans, computer users also will find high-capacity double layer DVDs to be an ideal back-up and storage medium for their data files.

Memorex leads the Double/Dual Layer DVD market with a massive 70 percent of U.S. market share through November 2005, according to the NPD Group, an independent market analysis firm that tracks point-of-sale information by volume and dollar sales to determine how well products are selling in the nation's top retailers.

Memorex 8X DVD+R DL and 4X DVD-R DL media will be available this month. Suggested retail prices for both formats are $29.99 for a five-pack with slim jewel cases or $39.99 for a 10-pack spindle. Memorex recordable media is sold in 23 of the nation's top 25 consumer electronics retailers, including Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Fry's Electronics, Kmart, Office Depot, OfficeMax, RadioShack, Staples, Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.

Fujifilm Blu-ray, HD DVD Media Available Summer 2006

Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of the global imaging and information technologies company, has announced that Fujifilm-branded Blu-ray and HD DVD media will be available mid 2006. Prototypes of the new Fujifilm HD DVD and Blu-ray media will be on display at the Fujifilm booth at CES 2006 (Central Hall, N101/102).

The company also continues to conduct significant research and development in the area of holographic storage technologies that will bring future generation, multiple terabyte optical storage capacity to consumer, entertainment and commercial applications. A single terabyte of holographic disc storage is roughly the equivalent of 16 days of continuously running DVD movies, or 8,000 times more data than a human brain retains in a lifetime. "

With mainstream adoption of high definition (HD) content, television sets and recording devices, consumers and retailers will need new storage technologies to handle ever-expanding digitized files. For example, a two-hour program in HD creates a digital file roughly 15-25 Gigabytes in size, or the equivalent of more than 13 hours of standard-definition TV.

Fujifilm research and development teams in Japan and the United States are building on internal expertise and the following core capabilities for advancing all types of current and future optical media:

  • Expertise with photosensitive material. The process of holography requires imprinting "images" of full pages of data into light sensitive material via laser technology, all of which will play a crucial part in the commercial development of future optical media. Fujifilm's unique photographic, audio and visual, data storage and optical media experience and knowledge is helping identify new coating technologies critical to storing large amounts of data.
  • Dye coating advancements. Optical media is able to record information through a combination of dyes, coatings and binder components. Only through leading chemical knowledge and manufacturing expertise can a company produce this precise a product with durability and performance, at a competitive cost. In 2003, Fujifilm unveiled its OXOLIFE dye coating, bringing these oxonol-based discs to market with Philips in 2004. Read more about Fujifilm's dye coating manufacturing expertise at http://www.fujifilm.com/tech/TechStoreOptical.jsp.
  • Thin-film coating precision/advanced polymers. Fujifilm has perfected the process of applying layers of material down to the nano-scale level. Engineers continue to advance these precise techniques through years of manufacturing all types of media including motion picture and 35mm film, enterprise grade data storage media and small, consumer storage advances such as the Zip disk and advances in current CD and DVD discs.

Fujifilm high-capacity Blu-ray and HD DVD optical media will be available through key Fujifilm reseller partners. You can obtain more information at www.fujifilm.com.

Verbatim/MKM Readies Production of Blu-ray Recordable/Rewriteable Media for Early 2006 Launch

Verbatim Corporation and its parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (Verbatim/MKM), has announced that it will begin shipping its new Blu-ray Recordable/Rewritable media in early 2006 when hardware and software products supporting the formats are launched.

Produced at MKM's optical disc manufacturing facility in Mizushima, Japan, Verbatim initial products will include 25GB single layer media in both write-once (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RE) formats. Verbatim/MKM has already supplied burner/recorder manufacturers and their software suppliers with engineering samples of its new high-capacity media for securing read/write compatibility.

The new Verbatim BD media will include a proprietary super-hard coat developed by MKM. This protective coating is a key technology for BD disc production since the BD data layer is close to the surface of the disc and not protected by a plastic substrate like DVD media. The new hard coat will protect the BD data layer from scratches and fingerprints without warping the disc, and allows the usage of the media in a bare disc form, without a cartridge.

In developing its BD-R and BD-RE media, MKM/Verbatim also leveraged its experience in producing 30GB UDO (Ultra Density Optical) blue laser media. The new Blu-ray media uses a structure similar to the UDO disc, which has delivered outstanding blue laser performance for more than a year and is widely used in optical libraries for legal, financial, healthcare and government applications.

With the availability of MKM/Verbatim premium-quality recordable BD media, users will be able to record and enjoy the amazingly sharp images that high-definition video provides. The high-capacity discs will also find extensive application in computer data storage. Verbatim/MKM is a contributing member of the Blue-ray Disc Association (BDA).

Cornice Launches Smallest-Ever HDD-Based Personal Storage Reference Design

Cornice Inc. has announced the smallest-ever hard drive-based personal storage reference design, which incorporates the Company's new storage offering -- the Dragon Series 8GB micro hard drive. This reference design, called Dragon Tail, allows consumer electronics (CE) OEMs a faster time-to-market option and the expertise and knowledge of the Cornice design team.

Dragon Tail brings the convenience of a USB stick and the huge capacity of external hard drive storage together in a device that can now truly be carried around comfortably in your pocket. The product can retail for about $18.50 per gigabyte -- four times cheaper than Flash's $80 per gigabyte retail price point.

Dragon Tail, roughly the size of a matchbook, is designed to withstand the extreme abuse of daily operation in a pocket-able environment and operates exactly like the popular Flash based USB sticks but with at least four times the capacity at the same price point. Without the capacity and write speed limitations of Flash, computer backup, complete MP3/Video library storage, picture storage from digital cameras, and even home/work computer synchronization is now possible. Larger capacity at an affordable price opens up a whole new world of consumer usage models that will be exploited by Cornice's OEM customers.

The Dragon Tail reference design is available now and is priced at $10,000 for the complete manufacturing design data plus 25 samples for qualification. Email Cornice's sales staff at sales@corniceco.com or call (303) 651-7291.

Pretec Unveils 4GB i-Disk Touch

Pretec Electronics Corp. has announced a drive it calls the "largest capacity fingerprint USB flash storage device in the world today." i-Disk Touch", a multi-function 4GB USB flash storage device with fingerprint biometrics security is designed to address growing demand for a popular and inexpensive mobile storage device which can secure and delegate access to sensitive data fearlessly and without cumbersome processes.

The proven fingerprint biometrics security makes sure data can only be accessed by (up to ten) authorized users without the need to bring keys or remember long strings of passwords. It not only secures data access, but the data itself; depending on user requirements individual files or entire directories can be securely encoded with Pretec i-Disk Touch and made available again when needed.

The biometrics security function of i-Disk Touch is only one part of a suite of security offerings which also includes additional software and/or hardware protection of data access through password protection; a protected key which can lock the PC from unauthorized use; or as a parental guard to prevent unauthorized access to forbidden websites, etc. Instead of using the traditional "Area" fingerprint sensor which requires the use of multiple devices taking up additional space at additional cost, the "stripe" fingerprint sensor in i-Disk Touch is coupled with a new monolithic single-chip solution; an innovative design in which i-Disk Touch can achieve a smaller footprint, larger capacity, and cost-effective way to secure data and content access for any home or office with security concerns.

i-Disk Touch is the center of Pretec multiple-function USB products offering both memory and I/O capabilities, which includes the currently available i-Disk BT (USB Flash + Bluetooth), i-Disk WLAN (with Wi-Fi connectivity) and many others which Pretec will launch in the next few months.

Another Pretec multiple function USB product introduced at CES is the Pretec e-Disk II+, a 512MB USB flash drive with built-in card reader, which such device can expand from 512MB to 4.5GB by inserting an optional Pretec 4GB SD/MMC card. Both i-Disk Touch and e-Disk II+ are available now with mass production scheduled next month.
