New Addonics Pocket DVD-R/RW Drive Gives Users the Best of All Digital Worlds

Addonics Technologies recently announced one of the smallest optical super combo drives that has all the functions of a DVD Player, DVD Recorder, CD Player and CD Recorder stuffed inside an enclosure that's not much larger than a double stack CD jewel case.

The Pocket DVD-R/RW can be used for burning DVDs or recording data on DVD-R, DVD-RW (4.7/9.4 GB) media; recording onto CD-R or CD-RW media; viewing DVD movies, accessing DVD material; or accessing any audio/video/data on standard CDROM media.

The drive is compatible with the following formats: DVD-R, double-sided DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CDRW, CD-ROM, CD-ROM XA, Mixed Mode CD, CD-I, CD-DA, CD+(E)G, CD-MIDI, multi-session Photo CD, Portfolio, CD-text, CD-Bridge, CD-Extra, Photo CD, and Video CD.  Five popular recording modes are supported, which include Track at Once, Multi-session, Disc at Once, Session at Once, and Packet Writing.

The Pocket DVD-R/RW weighs less than 14 ounces, and measures just 5.62 x 5.31 x 0.87 inches. Like most of Addonics' external storage solutions, the Pocket DVD-R/RW has been manufactured with multi-interfaces for easy connection to USB 2.0, Firewire, or CardBus/PCMCIA-based systems. One interface cable is included with the drive, and other interface cables can be purchased separately.

Each drive includes the appropriate interface cable; 110/240V AC/DC adapter, user guide, driver CD, Sonic MyDVD for DVD authoring, DVD/CD copying software, and MPEG-II decoding software for DVD movie play back.  Addonics recommends using Pioneer or Sony media for DVD-R or DVD-RW for best results.

Operating system support includes Windows 98SE/2000/Me/XP for USB and Firewire connections and DOS, Windows 95/98SE/Me/2000/XP for CardBus/PCMCIA.  Record/Read speeds for DVD are DVD-R 1X, DVD-RW 1X, and DVD-ROM 8X. The Record /Read speeds for the CDRW are 16X CD-R, 10X CD-RW, and 24X CDROM. Actual speeds vary depending on system hardware and type of interface connection.

List prices for the Addonics Pocket DVD-R/RW are $479 for the USB 2.0 Version (Model # AEPDRRWUM), $489 for the CardBus/PCMCIA Version (Model #AEPDRRWCB), and $499 for the Firewire Version (Model # AEPDRRWFW). Addonics products are available through major catalog companies, resellers, VARs, and distributors, including StorageUSA.com, Amazon.com, PC Connection, CDW, Buy.com, Provantage.com, Insight, Ingram Micro, and Ma Lab.

Adtec Previews New Products On Display at NAB2003

Adtec Digital, a world-leading manufacturer of professional MPEG-2 based solutions including decoders, encoders, multiplexers, single channel commercial insertion controllers, and digital cable headends, will have several new products on display at NAB2003, as well as demonstrations with Acterna, Callisto Media Systems, and others.  Adtec's latest products include the edje-2000 real time encoder, the edje-2100 DTV encoder, the edje-3000 multiplexer, and the edje-L digital video player with built-in QPSK satellite data receiver.

The edje-2000 is a contribution quality encoder capable of converting analog video and audio into an MPEG-2 transport or program stream. Supporting both DVB-ASI and IP platforms, the edje-2000 satisfies the encoding needs for contribution and distribution, as well as the IT space where IP based distribution is critical.

The edje-2100 is a DTV encoder ideal for satellite, cable, terrestrial and IP distribution systems.  It supports high quality MPEG-2 video and Dolby AC-3 audio.

The edje-3000 is transport stream multiplexer designed specifically for DTV systems.  Including ten DVB-ASI inputs, the multiplexer is ideal for aggregating
MPEG-2 transport streams for satellite, cable and terrestrial broadcasting, as well as MPE IP data encapsulation.

The edje-L digital video player and network appliance supports MPEG-2 video and audio, receiving schedules and commands via satellite that can be directly utilized or stored on the local hard drive.

The integrated QPSK satellite data receiver eliminates external receiver/routers and makes the edje-L a highly integrated solution that facilitates multicast delivery to thousands of locations concurrently.   The edje-L also has the ability to receive live streams from the edje-2000 encoder.

Acterna's DTS-200 MPEG-2 field instrument plays an integral part in the development and maintenance of Adtec's products.  Providing a compact, portable test platform, this gear allows users the ability to capture and play MPEG-2 streams, as well as perform complete real-time analyses at up to 214 Mbps, all from a lab or office PC.

Callisto's Voyager video server platform provides the infrastructure to ingest, store, manage, control and distribute video content between Adtec's encoders and decoders.  This provides end users with a virtual video repository, and a wide selection of services and features that can be used to enhance the video material.

Pinnacle Systems Debuts Liquid Chrome Postproduction Video Editing System

Pinnacle Systems, Inc. has announced Liquid chrome, the most comprehensive video editing and compositing solution the company has offered to the postproduction market. The newest member of the Liquid family brings together three of Pinnacle's acclaimed components into one system—Pinnacle's Liquid editing application, Pinnacle's TARGA 3000 compositing engine, and Pinnacle's K2 single-chip 3D DVE.

Liquid chrome adds to and complements the complete line of Pinnacle Liquid networked editors. The product range now includes Liquid Blue for multi-format broadcast environments, Liquid Chrome for realtime post settings where time and quality are at a premium, Liquid Silver for less effects-intensive MPEG-2 post editing, and Liquid Purple for low-cost software-based DV editing applications. The Pinnacle Liquid family supports Pinnacle's Palladium network storage solutions to enable easy deployment of sophisticated, collaborative workflows.

Details of the system include:

• Powerful, real-time 2D, 3D, Color, Key and Matte effects driven by Pinnacle's TARGA 3000 and unique K2 single-chip 3D-DVE. Additional premium effects capabilities are delivered through sophisticated software-based algorithms such as Liquid's CX color corrector.

• Up to four real-time layers of video and unlimited tracks of audio and video.

• A remarkable multi-pass process that automatically renders composites with more than four layers without taking foreground control from the user. Creativity and workflow are never interrupted.

• A modern interface for fast editing with intuitive contextual menus, no annoying windows to shift around, and an easily configurable environment that is quickly accessible to users accustomed to older interfaces.

• An open networking and exchange model that won't lock customers into a single, proprietary solution.

Suggested retail price for a complete Pinnacle Liquid chrome turnkey system without storage is $24,995. Existing Liquid silver systems can be upgraded for just $6,995 board and software (US suggested retail price) and current TARGA 3000 systems can upgrade for just $4,995 (US suggested retail price) during initial promotional periods.

KiSS Technology Introduces DivX V Inc. Introduces 46" Vizio P4 for $3,999

V Inc. today announced the successful shipment of its 46-inch digital plasma television. The Vizio P4 has a native resolution of 852 x 480 pixels, and is compatible with HDTV formats including 480p, 1080i and 720p. It comes standard with an integrated 181-channel NTSC/PAL TV tuner, attractive stand, and built-in stereo speakers. With a suggested retail price of $3,999, the Vizio P4 sets the reference for value in large format plasma TV/monitors.

The 3.2 inch-deep widescreen (16:9) plasma display boasts 20% or 150 square inches more viewing area than a 42" display. Its 160-degree viewing angle, 800:1 contrast ratio, and 16.77 million colors produce rich, bright picture viewing. A unique "fanless" design offers many hours of smooth and quiet viewing.

The Vizio P4 offers a complete compliment of inputs, accommodating the needs of today's home theaters and boardrooms. Analog video inputs include, computer RGB (VGA type 15-pin D-Sub), Component Video, S-Video, Composite Video, and standard RF. A DVI (Digital Video Interface) has been included on the Vizio P4 to allow direct digital input to similarly equipped PC or Macintosh computers, HDTV set-top boxes, and DVD players. Direct digital connection via DVI eliminates video scaling and noise artifacts, which are introduced because of unnecessary analog to digital conversion.

An advanced digital image processor enhances and controls the digital display's various input sources. It features high performance motion adaptive deinterlacing to produce progressive scan images from standard definition content and 3:2 pull down of filmed DVD material for flicker-free playback. Adjustable aspect ratios include 4:3 or 16:9 (Full), 4:3 to 16:9 (Stretch), and auto detect anamorphic (Enhanced for Wide Screen TV) modes. A digital pan-20x zoom-feature is a bonus for taking a closer look at replays in sports or movies and PIP makes sure you can keep track of two programs at the same time. Additionally, the Vizio P4 features an "Optimal Brightness" mode, to address the very different brightness requirements between computer and TV display settings.

Responsibly engineered the UL, the FCC Class B approved Vizio P4 features exceptional build quality to ensure many years of trouble-free usage. The TV/monitor comes with a one-year standard warranty on parts and labor. Weighing 81.57 lbs. with dimensions of 44.84"(W) x 28.4"(H) x 3.2"(D) or 44.84"(W) x 28.4"(H) x 8.3"(D) with stand, the Vizio P4 is available now.

In addition to the KiSS DVD player, a new version of the REALmagic Xcard Windows drivers from Sigma Designs is also being introduced. The new drivers offer DivX certified operation. Sigma's Xcard can now support playback of DivX Video 5.xx, 4.xx, and 3.xx, and also provides an additional custom skin GUI interface for a fresh new look and feel. The new Xcard upgrade is being demonstrated at this week's CEBIT 2003 show and is available immediately from Sigma Designs.

Strategy Analytics: DVD Recorder Sales Will Probably Pass DVD Players In Three Years

According to new research from Strategy Analytics, DVD video recorders are set to become the next hot trend in digital consumer electronics. The findings, released to subscribers to the Broadband Device Strategies service, show that worldwide sales this year will reach 2.7 million units and be worth $1 Billion in retail revenues. By 2005, consumers may spend more on DVD recorders than on play-only DVD players. Falling DVD recorder prices are being driven by competition among different format vendors and by new suppliers in the Far East and China.

Japanese consumers are already rapidly switching to DVD recorders, and this trend is now set to hit both the US and European markets. The average price of a DVD recorder will fall to $600 this year and to $450 in 2004, encouraging DVD owners to replace and upgrade their existing players.

The report predicts annual sales of DVD video recorders worldwide will reach 42.1 million in 2008. By that time, DVD recorders will be in 40 percent of homes in the US, 33 percent of homes in Europe and 62 percent of homes in Japan.

Strategy Analytics, Inc., a global research and consulting firm, provides timely insights and strategic business solutions to companies operating at the convergence of information, communications, and entertainment technologies. With worldwide headquarters in Newton, MA and principal offices in England, France, and Germany, Strategy Analytics focuses on market opportunities and challenges in the areas of Automotive Electronics, Broadband, Telematics, Wireless Strategies, and Enabling Technologies.
