Adobe Unveils New DVD Authoring Application: Adobe Encore DVD

Adobe Systems Incorporated recently announced Adobe Encore DVD, a professional DVD authoring application that extends the Adobe digital video product line. Adobe Encore DVD software lets professional videographers, DVD authors, and independent producers create sophisticated, multi-language DVDs with stunning interactive menus, multiple audio tracks, and subtitles. Adobe's latest video application combines an integrated authoring environment, a flexible design interface, and integration with Adobe Photoshop.

Adobe will debut the product during its keynote Super Session at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) tradeshow on Monday, April 7 in Las Vegas.

Adobe Encore DVD includes a comprehensive set of design tools and a powerful menu editor, adding a new level of creativity to the DVD authoring process. The integration between Adobe Encore DVD and Photoshop allows users to edit menus without flattening or re-rendering Photoshop files that make up the menu backgrounds for the majority of professionally-produced DVDs. Changes are instantaneous, easily reversible, and save hours of production time. The sophisticated menu designer also provides access to Photoshop text design tools for editing, styling, and aligning text within the project window.

Getting started with Adobe Encore DVD is straightforward with pre-designed button and menu styles that incorporate motion and still backgrounds. A simple interface within Adobe Encore DVD provides full control over navigation, allowing authors to specify playback behavior for their DVDs. A customizable library palette lets users save their favorite button and background designs for future use. In addition, Adobe Encore DVD automatically creates chapters from recognized marker points in Adobe Premiere and can import After Effects AVI files to create motion menu loops.

Using a familiar Adobe interface and project timeline, users can combine video, audio, and subtitles with up to 8 tracks of audio and 32 subtitle tracks. An efficient project management system keeps everything organized and allows users to track a project's structure, sort and find specific elements, and apply global changes to projects. Before burning a DVD, users can view their work in the integrated project preview window to check the navigational design for broken and orphaned links.

Adobe Encore DVD offers a high degree of playback compatibility with support for all recordable DVD formats including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-RAM. It also provides integrated video and audio transcoding, which automatically converts video source files to MPEG-2, audio source files to Dolby Digital, and optimizes file compression. For more control, professionals have the option to manually adjust the settings to their own specifications.

Adobe Encore DVD for Windows XP is expected to ship in the United States in the third quarter of 2003. The estimated street price is $549. Adobe Encore DVD will be available for purchase from, retail outlets, and Adobe certified resellers.

DNF Controls to present at NAB

DNF Controls, a global provider of field-proven control solutions for the broadcast and production industries, announced earlier that it will launch its new Flex Control Network at NAB2003. Flex Control Network uses modular, Ethernet-based, distributed control technology to deliver reliable, flexible, real-time machine control that meets the customer's control requirements.

Flex Control Network's advanced technology offers users shared, real-time
control of equipment resources within the facility, across town, or across
the country. It is easy to install, maintain, configure, and reconfigure, and it works alongside a facility's existing machine control design. Flex Control Network also supports integration with industry-standard protocols to allow control of video servers, routers, and other equipment typically found in a broadcast or production facility.

The Flex Control Network is comprised of two main components: the Device
Controller and the Control Panel. The Device Controller offers direct control of GPI, RS422, and Ethernet devices, including VTRs, DDRs, video servers, audio devices, graphics devices, and routers. The DC20 Device Controller provides control of four serial or Ethernet devices, while the DC30 Device Controller provides 32 GPIs and 32 GPOs. The Control Panel provides a familiar, tactile interface that operators are accustomed to and prefer. Using the Control Panel to control multiple device controllers, users can build the system they need for control within their facility or for control across geographic locations.

The new Flex Control Network-based Tally Interface Box allows mobile production trucks, production facilities, and broadcast facilities to quickly and reliably share tallies and other types of control/status lines. The Tally Interface Box's isolated inputs and outputs allow safe interconnection between equipment without fear of damage due to dissimilar voltage requirements, signal levels, or grounding. Users can monitor tallies and other status lines as well as configure the Tally Interface Box to specific requirements remotely via Ethernet,
Intranet, and Internet.

Flex Control Network products will be on display at NAB2003 booth SU6127.

• Direct-from-the timeline DVD authoring whereby the DVD track appears alongside the standard audio and video tracks and enables the user to create and edit graphic menus directly within the Pinnacle Liquid environment—The DVD timeline can be dynamically previewed with full interactivity including remote control simulation
• Analog output of the timeline, including real-time effects, via an NTSC/PAL connection providing users with a full preview of the final resolution and color of the project
• Inclusion of Pinnacle TitleDeko character generator, Commotion image editing and compositing software, Liquid CX color correction, and many other tools to enable editors to do their best work, in less time and at a affordable cost
