Ciprico Storage and System Solutions Featured at NAB 2003

Ciprico Inc., a leading provider of storage and system solutions to the broadcast industry, have announced and showcased its newest solutions at NAB 2003. The next generation DiMeda 3600 Digital Media Appliance and its leading-edge FibreSTORE 2210 (pictured) were demonstrated as part of a broadcast and post-production digital media workflow in Ciprico's technology suite at the Las Vegas Hilton. One of the world's first Digital Media Appliances, the DiMeda 2400, was also on display, integrated into many high-profile partner exhibits.

Combining SAN performance with NAS ease of use, the DiMeda allows multiple clients in a typical newsroom set-up to conduct real-time file sharing and playback of high quality digital video, even in multi-platform, multi-application environments.  Achieving performance levels exceeding 600 MB/s aggregate bandwidth, the DiMeda has completely integrated RAID storage architecture and a patented software layer.

The DiMeda 3600 offers high Quality of Service in the form of Bandwidth Management. This feature provides a means of delivering differentiated network storage services on a per client basis, allowing the customer to provision client bandwidth policies on the storage device according to the needs of a particular application or client. Ciprico will be demonstrating how the DiMeda's bandwidth management capabilities can enhance the digital media workflow in both broadcast and post-production environments in its technology suite during NAB 2003.

Also featured was Ciprico's FibreSTORE 2210, its 2GB Fibre Channel storage solution that is being effectively used by three of the leading broadcast manufacturers for use with their video server systems.  Ideal for mission-critical data-intensive playback applications, the FibreSTORE 2210 demonstration showcased the product's unmatched isochronous performance—guaranteed delivery of uncompressed high-definition video files at nearly 200 MB/s without ever dropping a frame.

At NAB 2003, Ciprico storage accounted for more than 50TB of centralized storage, powering demonstrations that showcased their partners' innovative new solutions.  Leading broadcast organizations such as Grass Valley Group/Thomson, Pinnacle Systems, Leitch Technology Corporation, Cintel, and Snell and Wilcox incorporated Ciprico solutions as part of their exhibits.

Sony's Rough Cut Bundle Serves as Backup Solution for Video Editors

Sony Electronics is simplifying the workflow process for Mac computer-based video editors with its new Rough Cut advanced video editing storage kit, a complete solution built around the Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT) data storage format.

The Rough Cut kit lets editors collect, backup, and archive their work throughout the editing process by storing all their project elements together as data files.  If an editing project is interrupted or requires revisions - even several years later - the project can be restored onto the editing station with all the source elements, time coding, and work intact, eliminating the need to collect, load, or re-digitize any material. Because the materials are stored in data formats, there is no loss in quality; the project is literally just as the editor left it.

The kit includes an AIT-2 drive with a FireWire interface, Mezzo ES Generation 4 backup software for Macintosh computers, ten AIT media cartridges with a total capacity of up to 333GB, and all necessary cabling for installation.  The initial shipments will also include two writable Sony DVD discs.

The first releases of the Rough Cut video editing storage kits are designed specifically for the post-production process using Apple Macintosh computer-based systems.  It is ideal for independent videographers, corporate A/V departments, and video production service firms.  The kit is compatible not only with Apple's Final Cut Pro editing software, but also with selected video and audio editing software from AVID, Adobe, Media 100, and DigiDesign, among others. The solution has minimum requirements of Mac G3 computers or higher, as well as Mac OS X version 10.2, or earlier to Mac OS 9.1 operating systems.

The Rough Cut video editing storage kit relies on advanced AIT technology to enable fast, reliable storage and retrievals.  The AIT-2 format featured in the original release has a maximum storage capacity of 50GB native per compact 8mm tape cartridge and a native data transfer rate of 6MB/s. The AIT-2 drive can also use lower capacity AIT-1 tapes (25 or 35GB native) and AIT-2 tapes (36GB native) for smaller projects.

Sony's initial AIT-2-based Rough Cut video editing storage solution, identified by the model number RCUT210MAC1, will be available in May for a suggested retail price of $1,999.

Avvida Introduces Processor for 10 SD Video Streams

Design engineers implementing solutions for video broadcast servers, VOD (video on demand), video over IP, or any high performance video application can now reduce cost, improve product design cycles, and speed time-to-market with the Avvida Systems Tsunami Video Processor.  The Tsunami platform combines the flexibility and scalability of PC-based platform with the power and programmability of Altera Stratix FPGAs to deliver one of the highest performance video processors on the market today.

The programmability of Avvida's system allows a high degree of optimization for specific applications.  Reprogramming the FPGA devices to handle different applications allows users to modify the system for many product profiles. A standard PC and Tsunami board can be used as a platform technology for many different video products, minimizing hardware specific drivers and product turnover.

The Avvida PCI product launch leverages the growth in PC-based multi-media standards, such as Microsoft's Media 9 and others. This new platform provides an economical video processing system that is opening new market opportunities in video creation and distribution over broadcast and IP networks.

The challenge for video creation and distribution on PC-based systems is high bandwidth processing of multiple SD or HD video on PC architecture. Avvida has solved this challenge by leveraging high bandwidth FPGA co-processors into a PCI-based architecture. The PC host is tightly coupled to the processing power of Tsunami to accelerate video applications while leveraging the high connectivity and standards build around PC standard protocols.
