Pioneer Introduces Multiple Format DVD/CD Writer

Pioneer Electronics announced a new DVD/CD internal writer to be available in June of this year.  Pioneer's sixth generation recordable drive, the DVR-A06, will provide another solution to consumers looking for worry-free DVD and CD recording.

Since several similar DVD recording formats are actively being promoted in the marketplace, confusion has become a growing problem for potential buyers. End users have been forced to sift through a bewildering array of drive and media types in order to find the best recordable DVD solution for their needs. In response, Pioneer's new DVR-A06 DVD/CD writer solves the problem by supporting the DVD Forum's DVD-R and DVD-RW disc formats as well as the +R and +RW formats.

The DVR-A06 enables high-speed recording of up to 4x write speed with high-speed DVD-R discs, 2x with high-speed DVD-RW discs, 4x with high-speed +R media, and 2.4x with +RW media.  It also records CD-R media at up to 16x speed and 10x with high-speed CD-RW discs.

The DVR-A06 supports both vertical and horizontal installation, so it can be used with 1-bay, slim-type PCs for expansion and flexibility.  The DVR-A06 will be available in June at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $329.

Roxio Acquires Pressplay as the Foundation for the Re-Launch of Napster

Roxio has announced that it acquired Pressplay, the one of the leading online music services.  As a result of this transaction, Roxio has acquired a legal digital music distribution infrastructure and catalog rights with all five major music labels.  Pressplay will serve as the foundation for the launch of Roxio's new legal on line music service under the Napster brand.

Under the terms of its agreement, Roxio has acquired substantially all of the interests of Pressplay, the joint venture of Universal Music Group (UMG) and Sony Music Entertainment (SME).  Roxio purchased its majority ownership for $12.5 million in cash and approximately 3.9 million shares of Roxio common stock.  Based on Roxio's closing stock price on May 16, 2003, the purchase price would be approximately $39.5 million excluding transaction costs estimated at approximately $1 million.  In addition, SME and UMG each have the right to earn up to $6.25 million based on positive cash flows resulting from the new Napster service.

UMG and SME will each provide a representative to join Roxio's board of directors.  Pressplay's president, Mike Bebel, will report directly to Chris Gorog, and Pressplay's senior management team and its offices in Los Angeles and New York will remain in place.

Flexplay Introduces 'EZ-D,' The 48 Hour DVD

Flexplay Technologies, Inc, a privately held company based in New York, today announced that Buena Vista Home Entertainment Division of The Walt Disney Company will use its flexible play DVD technology to make movies available to consumers in test markets beginning this August. The introduction of this product, branded "EZ-D," will include BVHE titles The Recruit, Rabbit Proof Fence, The Hot Chick, 25th Hour, Heaven, Equilibrium, Frida and Signs.

EZ-D will incorporate Flexplay's proprietary flexible play technology into a standard DVD. A Flexplay enabled DVD is similar to a conventional DVD, except that it has a 48 hour viewing window that begins when the disc is removed from its packaging. Consumers will then be able to enjoy the movie as many times as they wish during this time frame. After 48 hours, the DVD will no longer be readable by the DVD player and can then be recycled. A Flexplay enabled DVD works in all players, DVD drives and gaming systems designed to accept a standard DVD. GE Plastics has been a key strategic collaborator in the advancement of Flexplay's proprietary technologies, developing a new patented Lexan resin co-polymer essential to the flexible play design.
