Nero 6.0 Ultra Edition Released

With the imminent release of Nero 6.0, Ahead Software is addressing aspects of the optical recording process by its inclusion of advanced video editing and authoring, DVD playback, backup, MPEG-4 Nero Digital, and a whole new array of features and functionality.

The Nero 6.0 Ultra-Edition includes NeroVision Express 2.0, a solution for VCD/SVCD and DVD authoring with full video editing; Nero ShowTime, a DVD software DVD player for viewing DVD movies and your own projects, along with MPEG-4 (Nero Digital) compatibility; Nero BackItUp, with full, incremental, update, and differential control of your data, and disc spanning; InCD 4.0 for true drag and drop and save within application; CD/DVD writing; Wave Editor 2.0 and Nero Soundtrax, for multi-track audio editing and mixing; and MPEG-4 video and audio (high efficiency AAC), using Nero Digital for audio/video compression. The Nero Toolkit featuring CD/DVD Speed - the de facto industry standard for critical media and drive analysis and used by drive manufacturers worldwide - is also a major part of the Nero suite.

In additional news, Nero announced that Nero Express 5.5 DVD/CD application software, is to be included with all U.S. retail versions of the latest Pioneer DVR-A06 DVD/CD writer.

With its integrated multi-format DVD support, Nero takes advantage of the Pioneer DVR-A06's Precision Recording Technology, a new writing technique that improves initial writing performance and helps keep the normal deterioration of recording media due to repeated writing to a minimum.  Virtually any kind of CD or DVD can be created with Nero in combination with the Pioneer DVR-A06.  Nero's ultra stable CD and DVD writing engine also ensures maximum compatibility on most playback devices.

By supporting the DVD Forum's DVD-R and DVD-RW disc formats, as well as +R and +RW formats, Pioneer aims to decrease the confusion that often exists for consumers who are purchasing DVD/CD writers for the first time as the DVD recordable drive market continues to grow.

InFocus Introduces ScreenPlay 5700 Projector

InFocus  Introduces ScreenPlay 5700 Projector

InFocus Corporation is launching the new ScreenPlay 5700, a sub-$5,000 projector with cinema-quality performance.

The ScreenPlay 5700 is a new home theater platform from InFocus that includes the latest technology from both Texas Instruments and Faroudja. With these technologies integrated with the ScreenPlay design and function, the ScreenPlay 5700 delivers uniform brightness, high contrast in black and gray levels, and sharp, full-image focus with low distortion and no pin cushioning or barreling.

The ScreenPlay 5700 is also the first home projector to ship with the Matterhorn DLP technology from Texas Instruments, which provides native 16:9 resolution in the United States as well as in Wide PAL countries. With more DVDs coming to market in their original movie theater formats, consumers have been faced with watching their favorite stars either squished short and fat or stretched long and thin so they can fit into plasma or LCD screens. The ScreenPlay 5700 will display images in the way they were intended to be seen, so corners won't be cropped and headshots won't be cut off at the hairline.

The projector has 1000 lumens for clear pictures in almost any lighting condition and 1400:1 contrast ratio for crisp blacks and detailed gray scale. Calibrated to D65 color mastering standards for perfect HD colors, the projector can display 16.7 million colors simultaneously. There are eight selectable video sources for unrivaled connectivity and the Matterhorn DLP technology provides true native 16:9 resolution (1024x576). The new DCDi from Faroudja has additional color and sharpness, noise reducers and a videophile-grade scaler.  The ScreenPlay 5700 will be available on June 25.

ADIC AMASS For UNIX Software Extends Infinite File Life to New Media; Expands Supported Storage Devices

Advanced Digital Information Corporation, announced the availability of a new release of the company's archive software, AMASS for UNIX. AMASS is designed to provide long term automated access to organizations' key digital assets in a variety of high capacity, removable storage media types. The new version of AMASS, release 5.3.2, adds support for new storage devices and media, and it extends the company's exclusive Infinite File Life (IFL) long-term data integrity feature to Sony's AIT media.

ADIC's Infinite File Life (IFL) is an industry-exclusive feature that protects stored data from becoming lost or corrupted over time. IFL tests the integrity of data by periodically checking the rate of recoverable errors found in stored files. When error rates pass a defined threshold, the data is written to new media before any of the information in the file can be lost. The new AMASS release extends IFL capabilities to devices using Sony's AIT media, a tape format that provides rapid access to stored data and is widely used for long term archiving applications.

The new AMASS release also adds new support for storage devices, including the Plasmon Enterprise D Series DVD library, Quantum Super DLT 220 tape drives, and Ampex 314 tape drives. Support is also extended to version 6.1 of StorageTek's Automatic Cartridge System Library Software (ACSLS) tape library control software and the 2.3 release of ADIC's Scalar Distributed Library Controller (SDLC).
