Profound Effects Releases Useful Things 1.5

Profound Effects, Inc. is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Useful Things version 1.5.  Leading the list of improvements is a totally new user interface that streamlines workflow and support for Type 1 and OpenType fonts on both Windows and Mac OS X and .dfont fonts on Mac OS.

Four more "generators" are included in Version 1.5. Generators are a unique innovation in Useful Things. Generators are Useful Things components that plug in themselves to other Useful Things effects. Swapping a generator that is plugged into another effect provides a completely new look to the finished effect. For example, swapping one "shape" generator for another in a particle system effect completely changes the look of each particle without changing any of the particle system's dynamics.

In addition to remarkably flexible particle system effects, Useful Things offers many other types of effects that are unique to Useful Things.  Motion graphics designers will appreciate the many effects in Useful Things that generate motion graphics themselves. To understand the significance of this, consider a traditional effect like a blur that is applied to media created elsewhere. Many Useful Things effects, applied to a simple solid, actually generate interesting and appealing media to which traditional effects could be applied. Create a solid, add Useful Things, and enjoy cool motion graphics with minimal bother.

Many existing Useful Things effects have been updated or their capabilities expanded. Finally, Version 1.5 offers a substantially upgraded particle system engine that lays the ground work for exciting new capabilities in the future.

Useful Things 1.5 carries a list price of $395 and is available immediately. Owners of previous versions can download Version 1.5 at no charge from the Profound eXchange, an online repository of free effects and software updates.

Texas Memory Systems Boosts Application Performance Up To 25X

Texas Memory Systems, Inc. announced the release of its new RamSan-320 solid state disk storage unit.  The RamSan-320 demonstrates a 2X-5X performance leap over existing solid state disks and a 10X-25X performance enhancement over existing RAID storage.  With higher performance at a lower cost than other solid state disk units, the RamSan-320 is an attractive solution to most I/O bottlenecks where transaction and storage response times are critical.  Applications that benefit include OLTP (online transaction processing), OLAP (online analytical processing), modeling, and heavy-duty video servers.  Typical RamSan-320 users include corporations in the financial, telecom, broadcasting, and e-commerce sectors as well as government, military, and research organizations.

When customers move data requiring frequent and high performance access, such as database 'hot' files, to the RamSan-320, their applications accelerate.  Because the RamSan stores data in SDRAM, data reads and writes occur instantaneously.  This fast access improves overall throughput and query response time.  The RamSan's 3,000Mbps bandwidth and 250,000 I/Os per second mean that it can simultaneously boost performance for multiple servers.

The RamSan-320 uses a three-disk RAID back-up system, in addition to internal batteries, component redundancy, and hot-swap capabilities, for added data protection.  This is a significant advance in reliability for 24 X 7 data center operations with critical applications.

Texas Memory Systems has added a unique Active Backup feature that allows users to simultaneously benefit from a solid state drive's fast read and write performance and from hard disk drives' secure data protection.  The optional Active Backup mode uses performance not utilized by the application to constantly backup memory across three back-up hard disk drives.

The RamSan-320 fits seamlessly into a storage area network.  It provides up to 64 Gigabytes of SDRAM storage in a single 3U rack mount chassis and is easily managed using a secure Telnet, browser interface, or standard SNMP software.  The RamSan-320 unit includes from two to eight 2-Gigabit Fibre Channel ports, hot-swappable disk drives and power supplies, redundant batteries and fans.

Intersil, ViXS Collaborate to Deliver Uninterrupted Video Over 802.11g Networks

ViXS Systems, a leading developer of video networking chipsets and software, and Intersil Corporation, a world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance analog and wireless networking solutions, announced their collaboration in offering design tools for the transmission of video over standardized 802.11g.  The result is a software development kit (SDK) that combines ViXS' XCode with Intersil's PRISM GT chipset and PRISM Nitro technology.  The combination of the two chipsets ensures that consumer electronics manufacturers can quickly bring products to market that offer full standard compliance to existing 802.11b systems while delivering high-quality digital video over the same wireless network.

ViXS' XCode integrated circuit can adjust the bit-rates, resolutions and formats of multiple MPEG video streams in real time, adapting each stream to changing network bandwidth. As a result, products such as digital video recorders (DVRs), media gateways or set-top boxes can distribute high-quality digital video to any networked display device in the home, such as HDTVs, plasma and LCD TV monitors, PDAs, web tablets, personal computers and personal video recorders (PVRs).  By managing the video stream, XCode is the first to guarantee 30 frames per second of high-quality video over any type of Internet protocol (IP) network, including 802.11.  The XCode SDK is currently available and being used by leading consumer electronics manufacturers to develop next-generation video wireless products.

Intersil's advanced PRISM GT chip set solution incorporates Intersil's SingleSource(TM) Driver Suite with PRISM Nitro technology that delivers up to a 3x improvement in throughput for 802.11g clients operating in mixed-mode wireless networks and up to 50 percent greater throughput performance in 802.11g only networks.  PRISM GT is an ideal solution for high-bandwidth applications, such as wireless video streaming.
