DNF Controls Announces 24P Cuts-Only Editor

DNF Controls has announced the 2MCE 24P Cuts-Only Editor, designed for fast and easy-to-use news-style, two-machine cuts editing within 24P environments. The new system streamlines the editing process, according to DNF, allowing users to make quick fixes or audio overlays in 24P without having to tie up the entire edit suite. Built on DNF's ST300 controller platform, the 2MCE 24P Cuts-Only Editor supports 24P, NTSC non-drop frame, NTSC drop frame, and PAL frame rates. IN and OUT points may be marked or manually entered using the numeric keyboard. TRIM+ and TRIM- keys provide fast trimming by frames, seconds, minutes, or hours.  IN, OUT, and DURATION for each VTR is displayed on the 2MCE-24P's four-line LCD display. Editors can change source speed during an edit using the slomo wheel, as well as punch in and out on audio and video channels.

Video Without Boundaries Chooses Sigma Designs EM8475 MPEG-4 Decoder Chip for New MediaReady 4000 Internet/DVD Player

Video Without Boundaries, Inc., a provider of interactive, media-convergent home entertainment devices, announced the selection of Sigma's EM8475 digital media processor, for Video Without Boundaries' new MediaReady 4000 Internet/DVD Player, from Sigma Designs, Inc., a leader in digital media processing for consumer appliances. The EM8475, an advanced MPEG-4 decoder designed for set-top box applications, will drive digital video playback on the MediaReady 4000.

The Video Without Boundaries (VWB) MediaReady 4000, slated for commercial release in September 2003, combines a DVD/CD/MP3 player, Internet browser, email, and karaoke, along with a range of PC componentry. The product's open computing architecture will support a number of consumer upgrades; options planned for the near future include Personal Video Recorder (PVR), hard drives, video games, joysticks, video conferencing, and more.

Sigma Designs' EM8475 MPEG-4 digital processor is designed for IP video streaming in set-top boxes and media gateways. Incorporating the
company's REALmagic video streaming technology, the MPEG-4 chip supports full-resolution (720x576) and streaming video based on ISMA specification 1.0. The EM8475 provides integrated solutions for decoding of MPEG-4, as well as DVD, MPEG-2, and MPEG-1.

In addition to advanced online multimedia features, the MediaReady 4000 will include a full-sized wireless keyboard, 5.1 Surround Sound, picture-in-picture capability, karaoke microphone jack, wireless remote control, and microphone. Similar in size to a standard DVD player, the MediaReady 4000 is expected to retail for $349.
VWB's MediaReady 4000 units, developed in conjunction with Lung Hwa Electronics, the company's manufacturing partner, will be available in September 2003 via specialty and mass consumer electronics retailers.  The private-label units will be sold under the Lafayette brand in
the United States and elsewhere.

PERFECTV and On2 Technologies, Inc, Partner to Deliver Real-Time On Demand DVD-Quality VOD

PERFECTV, a division of Gatelinx Corporation and provider of video on demand (VOD) solutions, has formed an alliance with On2 Technologies, Inc. The integration of PERFECTV's Video On Demand (VOD) systems and the ON2 VP6 Codec, PERFECTV says, will provide customers with cost-effective, on demand DVD-quality video directly to their TV set.

The planned integration will offer robust VOD to the television set, according to PERFECTV, without requiring consumers to wait for downloads or reconfigure home-networking hardware. PERFECTV customers can select from vast video libraries supplied by content providers, who know that their video assets are protected through a state-of-the-art digital rights management system.

Unlike VOD systems that work only on computers, and relay a substantial loss in quality, PERFECTV's Gatelinx-enabled peer-to-peer networking
topography is designed to provide DVD-quality video exclusively to a viewer's TV set. This gives the viewer the ability to play, stop, pause, resume, rewind, and fast forward videos, without having to rent DVDs, pay late fees, or wait for new releases from their local video store or mail order club.

This new service will operate both throughout the United States and
internationally.

Sony Pictures Digital Acquires Sonic Foundry's Desktop Software Assets

Sony Pictures Digital and Sonic Foundry, Inc. announced on July 31 that Sony Pictures Digital has acquired all of Sonic Foundry's desktop
software products and related assets for $19 million cash, certain other consideration and assumption of certain trade payables, accrued liabilities, and capital leases associated with the desktop software business. The closing of the transaction follows the approval from Sonic Foundry stockholders on July 31 at the Company's annual meeting.

As reported when the news of the not-yet-complete acquisition first broke, Sony Pictures Digital plans to maintain the desktop software products business in Madison. Approximately 70 former Sonic Foundry employees will be working for Sony Pictures Digital out of Sonic Foundry's former facilities on Sherman Avenue. Sony Pictures Digital says it is eager to become a visible corporate citizen in the community, and has already met with area leaders from government and business. Sonic Foundry will continue to operate its rich media communications business with approximately 30 employees in downtown Madison.

Existing products, such as the industry-leading ACID, Sound Forge,
and Vegas Series of software products, as well as other related assets, are expected to continue in the marketplace. New versions of Screenblast Movie Studio and Screenblast ACID 4.0 software will be available at the end of August. Additional plans regarding specific software will be announced as they develop.

At the heart of the new Sonic Foundry is Mediasite Live, a rich media communications system used by education, corporate and government customers for Webcasting, distance education, online training, corporate communications, and related applications.

Screenblast, which debuted in September 2001, is designed to give consumers the ability to create, enhance, and share their digital videos, music, and photos with a combination of a software suite and an online service for sharing and personalizing consumer media.  Screenblast Movie Studio and Screenblast Music Studio (now known as Screenblast ACID 4.0 software) have been available through retail outlets since October 2002.

Microsoft Licenses Sonic AuthorScript for Digital Image Suite 9

Sonic Solutions has announced that Microsoft has licensed Sonic AuthorScript, the company's CD and DVD formatting and burning engine, for Microsoft Digital Image Suite 9, Microsoft's latest software application for advanced image-editing and photo organization. The embedded Sonic AuthorScript engine adds two new key features in Digital Image Suite 9: the ability to format and burn Video CDs that can be played back on hundreds of millions of multimedia PCs and DVD players, and the archiving and burning of photos and images onto CD-ROMs.

Sonic and Microsoft entered into a multi-year licensing deal in January 2002 in which Microsoft licensed Sonic's DVD-Video authoring technology. Under that agreement, Sonic is providing core DVD technology and development expertise to Microsoft. This new agreement between the two companies allows Microsoft to embed the Sonic AuthorScript VCD and CD burning engine in Digital Image Suite 9.
